Members and families of Innisfail and Tablelands-based former National Servicemen gathered at the Cardwell RSL Sub Branch on Sunday for their annual BBQ and buffet lunch; a long-standing tradition that has raised in a $3,000 boost for Cardwell’s over-65s Christmas celebrations.
The servicemen were called into military service through a national lottery based on their birthdays, creating a generation who shared unique experiences during their time in the Australian military. Although National Service ceased in 1971, the camaraderie forged through their service has continued, with their annual Cardwell gathering now a much-loved tradition.
More than 80 people attended Sunday’s lunch, including members of the Cardwell Lions Club and local sports fishing community, raising $3,000 for the annual Over-65s Christmas Party organised by the Cardwell Lions Club.
The Cardwell RSL Sub Branch congratulated the Cardwell Lions Club for its ongoing volunteer efforts and said it was pleased to support an event that brings the community together.
