The Herbert River Orchid & Allied Plant Society recently celebrated its 52nd annual show, putting on a colourful display of orchids, ferns and foliage plants.
Amongst the exhibitors were three youths, aged aged five, 10 and 14, bringing back the junior section after a long absence.
Society Secretary Judy King said the society was pleased to see younger growers getting involved, and has encouraged them to participate throughout the year, presenting a plant each month with certificates and trophies to be won.
The show featured a wide range of orchids and foliage plants, with Judy saying there was something for everyone to discover, from natives to international varieties and hybrids, while members also shared their knowledge of growing plants in different conditions.
Judy said the society regularly visits members’ bush houses to learn more about how different plants are grown.
“Some are huge, but it’s nice to go through and work out the different shades the orchids need,” she said, “Because all orchids grow under different conditions.”
Hinchinbrook Shire Councillor and society patron Donna Marbelli also attended the show to present the champion awards.
“The displays are absolutely stunning, beautiful orchids, ferns and foliage plants everywhere you look,” Donna said.
“Super exciting to see a junior display… Well done. Congratulations to all the winners, exhibitors and volunteers on another wonderful show.”
The society encourages novice growers to join, with yearly membership costing $15 and including day trips, weekends away and field days.
