Roy Orbison Show Takes Ingham’s Centre Stage

Roy Orbison Show Takes Ingham’s Centre Stage

Award winning singer Damien Leith is set to bring a very special show to Ingham, showcasing the wonderful music of Roy Orbison. This show however, is far more than just a tribute, encompassing the music of Orbison’s circle such as the Travelling Wilburys as well as special new tracks co-written with Joe Melson – Roy Orbison’s long-time collaborator. The show is a long time in the making and was formed through incredible circumstances, as an Australian Idol performance of Orbison’s song ‘Crying’, attracted the attention of his widow all the way in Nashville. This led to a series of life-changing events in which Damien was ingratiated into Orbison’s inner circle. “She called me and said she liked my version. She liked how I made it my own. Three years later she asked me to fly over to Nashville to record an album of his songs in my style to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday”, said Damien. “It was a huge honour. I got to work with a whole bunch of people associated with Roy Orbison.” As he got acquainted with Orbison’s circle, Damien met Joe Melson, co-writer of some of Orbison’s biggest hits. The two begun a fruitful collaboration, writing songs that are set to appear on the new tour. “We’ve written a bunch of songs. When people hear it, they get a sense of that era of music, but it also has a new spin”. The performance is a special solo acoustic showcase. One voice, one guitar, and one incredible repertoire. “The stripped back nature of the show grants a lot of freedom in the performance. It’s weird – I’ve done shows with a full orchestra but at the same time I found I’m enjoying myself more in these really intimate settings”. New to the region, Damien is incredibly excited to perform in Ingham for the first time. “I’ve grown up in regional areas. The reception to music is always really good. Really wholesome.” Speaking to Damien, we reflected on the amazing legacy of Roy Orbison, as his music continues to receive praise six decades after it was released. “People still buy CDs. They still come to shows. There are loads of people playing his stuff in different formats. He has a unique voice, and his songwriting was so different.” Damien Leith promises a night you won’t forget. WHAT: Damien Leith presenting “Roy Orbison and Friends”

COUNTDOWN TO COMEDY

COUNTDOWN TO COMEDY

The calendar has ticked over to March and rehearsals are well underway for the Ingham Theatre Group’s first offering of 2026. “In Good Audience” is the moniker for a collection of short plays and sketches sure to tickle the collective funny bone. Familiar faces will be joined by some enthusiastic newcomers to present a variety of content with the unifying theme of good fun. For the first time, the production heads out to Forrest Beach and the spacious Progress Hall with evening performances on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th commencing at 7pm and a first-ever matinee on the Saturday at 2pm. Doors will open an hour before commencement, and refreshments will be available. Tickets are available online at hinchinbrooktickets.com.au and at the door. Adult entrance is $20 and the student, senior and concession price a mere $10. And, as one character remarks in the first play – the best part of going to the theatre is that there are no ads! Except, perhaps, a reminder that the ever-popular theatre restaurant season will return in August so there is more fun to look forward to. See you at the show!

Experience The Magic Of The Burdekin Water Festival This September

August 4, 2025

In just six short weeks, one of the state’s longest running annual celebrations will return to the streets of the Burdekin Shire for a memorable day of fun, festivities, food and fabulous entertainment!

Just a few hours’ drive South of the Hinchinbrook Shire, the Burdekin Water Festival will come alive on Saturday the 6th of September to celebrate the township’s abundance of water and rich agricultural sector with a series of events scheduled throughout the afternoon and into the night in the heart of Ayr itself.

The official Queensland Country Bank Grand Parade will line Queen Street from end to end with an array of magnificent floats, machinery, marching bands, and community groups for all to enjoy from 4:30pm onwards. Over the past couple of months, countless local businesses, schools, community groups, and organisations have been hard at work, decorating their floats to bring the magical 2025 theme of “Bon Voyage – Roam the Globe” to life for festival goers to admire from the footpath.

The procession will then be followed by a memorable Mardi Gras overflowing with live entertainment, games, amusement rides, side-show alley favourites, face painting, Melville’s Petting Zoo and a wide variety of market stalls.

2025’s Burdekin Water Festival will also stage the debut of Burdekin Eats, a new international culinary experience inviting attendees to experience a wide array of foods from across the globe! In line with the festival’s travel theme, Queen Street will be filled with tastes, sights, and sounds from countries far and wide to create a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere like never before.

Additional festival favourites will also make a return this year including the Tug-O-War Competition, where teams will battle it out for the coveted title of Grand Champion! Winning announcements for the Garden Competition, Window Display Competition, and the drawing of the Major Raffle will also take place during the evening.

At 7pm sharp, all eyes will turn to the Main Stage, where judges and committee members will crown the Winning Junior Ambassadors, bringing the 2025 Ambassador Program to a close and marking a key highlight in the festival calendar.

Building on the success of last year’s iconic come back, the Burdekin Water Festival Committee is hopeful this year’s event will be bigger, better and more brilliant than ever!

To view the full program of events and festival updates, visit the Burdekin Water Festival’s newly launched website, www.burdekinwaterfestival.com.au or check out the event’s social media pages across all platforms to stay in the loop!

Junior Theatre Takes The Stage

July 29, 2025

On Saturday, the 26th of July, the Junior division of the Ingham Theatre Group debut in their first matinee. After 10 weeks of work-shopping improvisations, theatre sports, performance technique, stage craft, and most importantly fun and friendship, the Juniors stepped up and performed the wondrous adventure that was 'Princesses of a Feather'.

Together, the cursed princesses-turned-birds, defeated the evil knight Sir Glimmerpants with the help of Charlie Cowgirl Cat In A Cape, while the narrator kept us all engaged with her dramatic reading. After the princesses regained their human-hood, the Macarena was danced in celebration, and awards were handed out to  Cooper, Skylah, Ebony, Mia, Lily, Florence, Audy, Holy-Catherine and Jamie-Lee, the bright young stars.

Aliens Are Landing In Cardwell This August!

October 9, 2025

See You-F-O There!

The countdown is on for one of Australia’s most unique and exciting events. The Australian UFO Festival, returning to Cardwell from Friday, 8th to Sunday, 10th August!

Whether you're a believer, a sceptic, or just love a good party, there’s something for everyone during this cosmic weekend that blends science, mystery, community, and fun.

What started as a quirky local market day has grown into a full weekend of activities, drawing visitors from across the country to experience everything from expert talks to telescope tours, costumed aliens, and glow-in-the-dark parties along the foreshore.

The festival is anchored by two major themes: the fun and playful side with markets, crab races, costume parties, and the iconic Alien Invasion Foreshore Party, and a serious space for inquiry through the C-Files Forum, a two-day conference featuring respected researchers, experiencers, and speakers from around Australia and abroad.

This year’s C-Files Forum boasts an extraordinary lineup, including investigative journalist Ross Coulthart, UFO researcher Bill Chalker, contactee and psychic Andrew Radziewicz, and podcast hosts like Anthony Goodall (Encounters Down Under) and Triffon Peart (Unlocking the Code), among many others. Attendees will hear firsthand accounts of encounters, deep dives into ancient mysteries, and discussions about government disclosure, consciousness, and extraterrestrial life. It’s a rare opportunity for those curious about the unknown to come together in a welcoming, safe, and open-minded space.

The festival kicks off on Friday with a mobile planetarium experience for local schools and the community, followed by a stargazing evening guided by professional astronomers and two large telescopes. On Saturday and Sunday, the town comes alive with market stalls, family-friendly entertainment, live music, kids' activities, and surprises galore! Including costumed aliens roaming the foreshore and a visit from E.T. himself at the Op Shop’s iconic display.

Festival founder and organiser Thea Ormonde says the event is all about connection, “We bring people together — locals, travellers, believers, and the just-plain-curious — and create a space where everyone can have fun and feel welcome,” she says. “It’s about community, wonder, and just letting go and enjoying the mystery.”

Visitors are encouraged to book accommodation early, grab forum tickets in advance, and dust off their best intergalactic costumes. Whether you're chasing answers or just chasing crabs, Cardwell is the place to be this August!

For the full program and ticket information, visit: www.australianufofestival.com.au and follow @australianufofestival on Facebook for updates, sneak peeks and out-of-this-world announcements.

Cosy Atmosphere And Collectables At The Conroy Hall Markets

October 9, 2025

By Victoria Velton

I had the pleasure of visiting the Conroy Hall Market, and it was a real treat. I wandered through tables of vibrant handmade goods, admired the lush array of plants, and couldn’t resist taking home a delicious sponge cake. The friendly stallholders made it feel like a true community hub, and I only wished I’d stayed longer to enjoy the live music from the choir.

If you haven’t been yet, the next Conroy Hall Market is on Saturday, 9 August, from 7:30am to 11:30am at 43 McIlwraith Street, Ingham. This long-running, all-weather indoor market is packed with personality and local treasures – from handmade crafts and vintage finds to plants, books, jewellery, clothing, and the popular $100 Club! Don’t leave without sampling the famous homemade cakes, jams and biscuits, or treating yourself to a fresh bacon and egg toastie. If you're interested in having a stall, contact Rita on: 0417 792 602.

FOLK, FAMILY AND WARMTH

At Halifax’s Festival Of Small Halls

On Wednesday, 9 July, the Halifax Progress Association hosted the Festival of Small Halls winter tour. This annual July festival begins in Cooktown and winds its way down the coast, ending at Macleay Island.

Supported by local act Michelle from Halifax, Champagne Weather and Charm of Finches delivered a true communal atmosphere, with each band a family act and the audience filled with friends and family from across the district.

Michelle, a performer on the night and one of the organisers from the Halifax Progress Association, thought the evening met all hopes.

"It absolutely exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I have been very lucky to have some incredible people help along the way. So I am not the whole and sole person of this, and I couldn't have done it without my team from the Halifax Progress Association."

She felt the event was well supported by the local community: "I'm very, very happy, and I think everybody really enjoyed their night tonight. It was a very classy event."

With comfortable sofas, soft lamplight, local wines and shared platters of food, the night offered the sights and sounds of relaxation and intimate folk music, successfully weaving through all the senses.
