On Saturday 11 October, the Cardwell Coastguard hosted its annual Tropical Plant Expo, drawing plant lovers from near and far. The event featured an impressive range of plants for both display and sale, with many local sellers showcasing exceptional specimens.

Visitors enjoyed browsing the stalls, chatting with growers, and picking up new additions for their gardens. Alongside the plants were home-grown fruit and vegetables, a delightful selection of prize-winning homemade jams, and beautiful artworks by Mandy.

No Coastguard event would be complete without the classic BBQ, complemented by coffee and cake. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all who attended.

TYTO Regional Art Gallery is currently home to two thought-provoking exhibitions, each exploring the world around and beyond, through entirely different lenses.

In the main gallery, Flies and Weevils and Cockroaches by Lorraine Lamothe invites visitors to see beauty where they might least expect it. At 75, Lorraine found herself yearning to reconnect with her creativity after a quiet spell. “I thought, well, that’s it, I’ve got to put myself out there again and see what can happen,” she said. When Tyto confirmed her exhibition, she recalls thinking, “You’re not done yet, girl. You’re not done yet.”

That moment reignited her passion for creating work that not only excites but also makes people think. Her collection of sculptural insects and woven displays celebrates the misunderstood creatures most people prefer to avoid. “I chose insects that are really disliked,” Lorraine explained. “People need to understand that they’re not all bad. They break down decaying plant material and help the environment. Let’s not be prejudiced about these insects, let’s find joy in them.”

Across the way, in the Niche Gallery, artist Ashleigh Jane takes visitors into the realm of myth and legend with Mythical Beasts. Her intricate illustrations breathe new life into creatures drawn from global folklore, from Egyptian hybrids to celestial goddesses. “I’ve always been fascinated by mythology and folklore,” she said. “I wanted to delve a little deeper and rediscover stories that lurk in the darkness, the ones people might not know.”

Ashleigh’s exhibition features works from her upcoming second book. Each piece is both a visual story and a modern reimagining of ancient tales. “My favourite story is about Doddle, a rain goddess who milks her heavenly cows to make it rain,” she shared. “But my favourite drawing is the Ikenty, a bird with a cat’s head found in Egyptian hieroglyphs. No one really knows what it was for, but I loved bringing it to life.”

Together, these two exhibitions celebrate the power of curiosity, whether it’s found in the smallest of creatures or the myths that have shaped cultures for centuries. Both artists remind us that inspiration can be rediscovered at any stage of life, and that beauty often hides in the unexpected.

Seafest 2025 brought the Cardwell foreshore to life with a vibrant celebration of the sea, community spirit, and local culture. Held over the weekend, the festival attracted visitors from across the region to enjoy a jam-packed program of entertainment, food, andfamily-friendly fun.

Highlights included the thrilling mullet toss, live music from talented local artists,and visits from Ariel the mermaid and Captain Jack Sparrow the Pirate. Market stalls showcased everything from handmade crafts to local produce, while kids enjoyed facepainting, fishing and beachside games.

Halifax came alive on Saturday, 27 September with the very first Rock N Croc Festival, held at Riverview Park behind the Spar. From 2:00pm, campers, locals, and visitors gathered to enjoy an afternoon and evening packed with laughter, food, and great entertainment.

Despite the heat, many festivalgoers kept cool with snowcones while the bar proved a popular stop. As the sun went down, live music filled the park, with local performers and headline act Slippery Gypsy keeping the crowd engaged with a mix of originals and covers.

Market stalls offered an eclectic range of treasures, including handmade woven mats, plants, jerky, crystals, books, toys, jewellery, and 3D printed curiosities. There were also fun services on hand, with rainbow hair extensions and glitter adding sparkle to the occasion.

Families embraced the festival atmosphere, with children playing ball games and running about being lively, while motoring enthusiasts admired the retro cars and bikes on display. Disaster preparation teams such as the S.E.S. and the Halifax Fire Brigade were also present, providing valuable advice ahead of the wet season.

The Rock N Croc Festival highlighted the strength and spirit of Halifax, bringing locals, visitors, and volunteers together for a memorable day. With such strong community support and enthusiasm, the festival has the potential to become a regular and celebrated event on the district�E��E�E���E��Es calendar.

The Ingham 2025 Maraka Festival is set to make a splash with its exciting new addition, the Maraka Fun Family Run-Swim-Run and Individual Aquathon! Join us for a morning filled with fitness, fun, and community spirit on Saturday, October 18th, with the first event kicking off at 6:00am at the Hinchinbrook Aquatic Centre.

The Herbert River Orchid and Allied Plant Society�E��Es annual Spring Show dazzled plant enthusiasts over two vibrant days, 19�E��E20 September. Drawing visitors from near and far �E��E including as far as Brisbane �E��E the event transformed Ingham into a tropical paradise of colour, creativity, and community spirit.

Spectacular orchid displays, expert growers, and heartfelt contributions from volunteers and members made the event a standout. Society member Judy King and patron Donna Marbelli also highlighted the dedication behind the scenes, from award presentations to behind-the-scenes organisation.

The Herbert River Orchid and Allied Plant Society held a vibrant and successful Spring Show across Friday and Saturday, 19�E��E20 September. Plant lovers from near and far, gathered to marvel at the glorious displays of orchids and other tropical plants.

Society member Judy King also reflected on the success of the event, "Our spring show is over for another year. Wow, thanks to our visitors for your support. To our sellers and members your hard work is much appreciated.

Thanks to Mayor Ramon Jayo for opening our display for the bush house. Thanks to our patron Donna Marbelli for  presenting trophies to the winners of champion Orchid and foliage. The displays were truely stunning and a credit to the club member. Thanks to the Hinchinbrook Shire Council for your grant to enable our club members to present an awesome Spring Show."

With colourful displays, proud local growers, and community spirit in full bloom, this year�E��Es Spring Show once again cemented its place as a highlight on the Hinchinbrook calendar.

Join basketball legends Lauren Jackson and Tess Madgen for this exciting She Hoops clinic, delivered as part of the WNBL Townsville Tip-Off. Seniors Morning Coffee Club

Marine Radio Licence Course
