Did You Know? Halifax’s Mango Avenue Is Heritage-Listed

Shade, but make it historic. Halifax’s Row of Street Trees on Macrossan Street — mostly mango trees planted around 1885 — is Queensland Heritage-listed for its cultural significance. What started as practical heat relief evolved into a leafy community lounge room. For generations, these trees shaded shopfronts, schoolkids and neighbours swapping stories in the afternoon cool. Today, they still frame the town beautifully, with classic buildings and the Herbert River Museum nearby, tying together sugar, settlement and everyday life. It’s proof that some of the best planning decisions ripen over time. Stroll beneath the canopy, snap the symmetry, and remember: good ideas, like good mangoes, age beautifully. Crushers Take The Loss

Crushers Take The Loss

The Herbert River Crushers travelled to Townsville on Sunday and came up against Centrals who were too strong in all 3 grades. The Centrals Tigers side were up 34 - nil with 20 minutes to go in the match before Herbert River got on the board. Utility player Kynan Purdy, winger Bailey Skipper and backrower William Trethaway scored tries while captain & five eighth Dylan Gaggiano kicked 2 goals to give the Crushers a glimmer of hope, but the Tigers scored 2 more tries, one of which was converted to hand the Crushers their first A-Grade loss of the season. In Reserve Grade Centrals had gotten out to lead 12 nil before the Crushers scored either side of halftime with front rower Matty Chiesa pushed 2 defenders off to score first. With winger Riley Dickson's conversion, the Crushers went into the break 12 - 6 down. Soon after halftime halfback Keith Kyle stepped through the defence and the Crushers had a glimmer of hope to be down 12 - 10. Unfortunately for the Crushers Centrals scored 3 more tries to runaway with the game 28 - 10. Under 19s coach Annan Whittington advised the team started well and were in the grind for the opening 10 minutes but could not keep the intensity up for the entire half, centre Evandah Bann crossed just before half time and after halfback Hezekiah Nona converted it left them 18-6 down. Injury and an inability to stay engaged mentally for the 2nd half, meant Centrals ran away with the result 32 - 6. Whittington challenged the team in the dressing sheds at full time to get their preparation right and quickly adjust to the intensity of senior rugby league before playing competition leaders, Brothers in a fortnight. Multiple St Teresa’s College boys should be available for selection for that match, which should be some very welcome players to bolster their backline. Nona was named Players Player while hooker Aiden Stedman, centre Marsat Newman, five eighth Riley Morris and fullback Mitch Maher were all outstanding in defeat. There are no games next weekend. The Crushers next play Brothers in Townsville on Sunday, 10th May. Contributed with thanks by Peter Reitano.

Australian Songwriting Icon Comes To Ingham

February 9, 2026

By Sebastian Conidi

Known for the radio hits of Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, and eclectic songwriting of solo project Diesel, legendary Australian singer-songwriter Mark Lizotte will be coming to Ingham for a very special type of show. The BY REQUEST TOUR, will see audiences actively participating in the music, allowing fans to choose the songs they want to hear from Diesel’s immensely varied and impressive career. It will cross through Ingham Saturday 21st February via the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall.

Whether it be rock radio staples from 1989’s smash hit Johny Diesel & The Injectors, or fresh tracks from the most recent LP Bootleg Melancholy, audiences are in for a great night of spontaneity and improvisation.

This style of show originally begun in 2005, following Mark’s turn to solo performance. Over 20 years later, the by request style of show returns with updated features including the options of covers ranging from jazz standards to Rhianna. Despite such a varied career, Mark has been able to bring songs together for an eclectic ever-evolving set.

“I’ve kind of mingled them together. It’s like a family where you just keep adopting children and you introduce the new kids to the older ones,” he said.

“The songs play off each other. It’s always intriguing to hear how a new song is going to sit next to an older one.”

The current series of solo performances has it’s roots in New York in the early 2000’s, where Mark went to reinvent himself as a solo performer after splitting from the Injectors.

“I started doing solo shows there, because I saw people doing these shows by themselves and it looked like a lot of fun, although quite challenging as well,” Mark added.

“There’s definitely no place to hide. However, there is a really special connection with the audience – they can hear every little squeak and nuance. Vulnerability is a strength.”

As I spoke to Mark over the phone, I could tell that his talent and success were clearly defined by an immense passion for music. Though incredibly successful in his own right, he demonstrated humility, expressing his adoration for the artists that had inspired him.

“It was pretty amazing to support Bruce Springsteen. Seeing my amplifier next to his was surreal.”

Mark also expressed a great connection with Australian songwriters, such as Colin Hay of Men at Work.

“I remember seeing him at Queenscliff Music Festival in Victoria. I had played in the afternoon and he came on after. He just blew my mind. He was really comfortable and was able to convey so much with just an acoustic guitar and one pedal,” he said.

“The irony is that a lot of his songs are about anxiety and depression. They’re like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s really easy to think it’s a happy little pop song, but his themes run much deeper.”

It’s clear Mark’s musical journey has been nurtured by the people he’s played with.

“I saw a solo show of Neil Finn in New York where he actually invited me up. I discovered how solo performance could be about the power of suggestion,” he said.

“When I strip things back, I can still hear all the parts because of the power of what’s implied. I do little subtle things with my hands and voice to imply certain parts, but the brain fills in the rest. It’s an amazing thing, imagination.”

As a seasoned performer, Mark is “no stranger to the Bruce Highway”.

“Every stop along far north Queensland has a real looseness about it. The audiences are always real music lovers”.

The environment and beautiful landscape continue to play an active role in shaping the expression of the music.

“I think music is totally influenced by environment. Take Thelma Plum for instance, her music still has an Australian sound to it. It doesn’t just sound like 20 UK acts. I think it’s an Australian tradition to mix things people might not otherwise think of,” Mark recalled.

“When Beds are Burning hit the radio across the world, it was like no one had ever heard anything like it. It was jagged and angular, but it sounded like the Aussie bush fused with protest, heart and soul. The country we live in is brutal and beautiful at the same time.”

With a great deal of passion and experience on display, this is not a show you will want to miss. You can go to the Diesel website: dieselmuisc.com.au/shows for more details.

Tones and I Is coming to Ingham!

February 6, 2026

If there’s one thing you can count on in Hinchinbrook, it’s that when our community comes together, big things happen, and the whole region proved it. Thanks to an extraordinary show of local support, Ingham is set to host the Tones and I concert, with the Ingham Showgrounds locked-in as the concert venue. The first round of 3000 tickets have been sold and the excitement is already buzzing from one end of the district to the other. Many out-of-towners have already booked up local stays and many eager businesses are making plans to fully capitalise on this Tones & I boom.

Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor Ramon Jayo said the result is a testament to what makes the Hinchinbrook community truly unique.
“We’ve got ordinary people doing extraordinary things — and that’s the magic of this place,” Mayor Jayo said.
“A huge congratulations to Justine Stoddart. From serving pizzas to sparking a community-wide movement, she’s shown what one passionate local can achieve. Justine, take a bow.”
The Mayor also paid tribute to the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and residents who backed the push with enthusiasm and genuine Hinchinbrook spirit.
“This was a whole-of-community effort. A round of applause to our Chamber, our businesses and every local who clicked, shared, voted and cheered this on,” he said. “When Hinchinbrook pulls together, there’s nothing we can’t do.”
Council will continue working closely with event organisers and will share full concert details as they’re confirmed.
Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce President Mary Brown said the campaign showcased the strength of local collaboration.
Family Owned Established 1997
“This is what happens when we unite behind a common goal,” Ms Brown said. “The energy and determination from every corner of the community has been incredible — and now we get to celebrate with an event that will put Ingham on the map.”
Campaign lead Justine Stoddart said the result was beyond her wildest dreams.
“I’m just blown away,” Ms Stoddart said. “What started as a simple idea turned into something so much bigger because everyone jumped in to help. This is for Hinchinbrook — and I can’t wait to see the joy it brings.”
Tones and I made the official announcement on her Facebook page, saying:
“So we have decided to add 5 more shows. However, the first show on the 20th of February will be in…
Ingham!!!! I have seen it all! You guys went HARD — I can’t wait to come to your beautiful town!
We can’t wait to meet you all! We’ll visit as many small businesses as possible too! Now I need recommendations — where should we eat, stay, go? Experience?! Tones is coming! There are 4 more shows to come. Keep your eyes peeled! It’s not over yet! Love you.”
For now, Ingham and the Hinchinbrook region are savouring the moment — and gearing up for something amazing, with many plans in the works to make the weekend Tones & I come to Ingham a very special one.
Justine Stoddart has launched a new Facebook page after the success of the ‘Get “Tones AND I” to come to Ingham’ page. The new page, ‘Let’s TONES it up Ingham’, is designed to:
“show Tones and everyone visiting our wonderful slice of heaven for the weekend what we have to offer, food, clothing,

accommodation, entertainment, tourism experiences. Let’s put our community on show,” Ms Stoddart wrote.

Tones & I Brings Ingham Together

January 30, 2026

The Hinchinbrook community got hyped up with the launch of a fantastic campaign – to get Tones and I to perform in Ingham!

For those who are unaware, Tones and I (a major pop singer) announced on her Facebook page that she would perform a concert in a random town. As per Tones' request, to enter the competition, a Facebook page was to be created, and the community with the most “noise” (comments, shares and likes) would win.

A Facebook page was created by a member of the community and called: Get “TONES AND I” to come to Ingham, and it saw a lot of traction with locals, businesses, and even our local member Wayde Chisea getting behind it and making a post with many were hilariously photoshopped images of Tones joining in the local comunity.

With the page amassing more than 1000 members in just a week, Hinchinbrook showed how they could all stand together to try and get the popstar to play our little regional town.

Thanks everyone, even the flashmobbers who got out to dance, you really put on a good show as the community screamed:

"Let's get Tones and I to come to Ingham!"

'Through My Eyes' New Gallery Exhibition By David Boucher

January 27, 2026

An exhibition that opened at the Tyto Regional Gallery on January 22 is challenging long-held assumptions about art and perception. Artist Dave Boucher, a former computer technician of 25 years and artist of 30 years, has opened a new body of work designed to show that colour blindness is not a barrier to painting, but simply a different way of seeing the world.

Through impressionist landscapes, detailed portraits and integrated technology, artist Dave Boucher invites viewers to experience art through his eyes, showing that colour blindness has never been a barrier to creativity but rather a defining influence on how he approaches his work and engages audiences.

“It doesn't matter if you're colour blind, you can still paint. And it's through my eyes, of showing how I do it.”

Boucher says questions about how he chooses colours are common, particularly from those unfamiliar with colour blindness.

“Because people say to me, how do you know what colour to paint? And I say, because it's written on the tube,” he laughed.

He explains that the greatest challenge comes when colours are mixed on the palette, as he perceives different hues to what most viewers would see. To manage this, he tends to work with bold colours, an approach that aligns naturally with his impressionist style.

Free Pool Parties Planned Across Cassowary Coast This Australia Day

January 19, 2026

Australia Day will be celebrated poolside across the Cassowary Coast this year, with free community pool parties inviting families, friends and neighbours to cool off and enjoy the day together.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is hosting a series of relaxed, family-friendly pool parties on Monday, 26 January 2026, offering locals a fun way to mark the national day without the pressure of large-scale events.

From late morning through to the evening, swimming pools across the region will come alive with music, laughter and the unmistakable smell of a classic BBQ, as community groups fire up the sausage sizzles and welcome visitors through the gates.

Innisfail Swimming Pool: 10am – 2pm
Mission Beach Aquatic Centre: 10am – 2pm
Cardwell Swimming Pool: 10am – 2pm
Tully Swimming Pool: 3pm – 7pm

Entry to all events is free, making them an easy option for families looking for a low-cost way to spend Australia Day together. Alongside open swimming, there will be music to set the mood and plenty of opportunity to relax, catch up with friends or meet new faces.

The events are supported by the National Australia Day Council, along with local swimming and fitness providers including Marlin Coast Swimming and Fitness, Grimsey’s Aquatics and Cotter Aquatic Swim and Fitness. Local community groups will also play a key role on the day, hosting BBQs and helping create a welcoming atmosphere at each location.

Mayor Teresa Millwood said Council was proud to work alongside local organisations and volunteers to deliver the celebrations.

“Council is proud to partner with the National Australia Day Council, local aquatic providers and community groups who give their time and support to deliver these events for our community,” she said.

Cr Trudy Tschui said the pool parties reflected the spirit of Australia Day at a local level.

“Australia Day is about coming together as a community, and these pool parties offer a safe, welcoming and enjoyable way for families, friends and neighbours to celebrate locally,” she said.

For more information about Australia Day events across the Cassowary Coast, visit the Council website or contact Council directly.

Ingham Theatre Group Takes Centre Stage In 2026 With Full Calendar Of Creative Activity

January 19, 2026

The Ingham Theatre Group is gearing up for an exciting and dynamic 2026 season, bringing a vibrant mix of performances, hands-on workshops, and youth opportunities to the heart of the Hinchinbrook community. As a cornerstone of local culture and creativity, the group continues to expand its offerings beyond traditional productions, engaging audiences of all ages with theatre that entertains, educates, and inspires.

Founded more than 50 years ago, the Ingham Theatre Group has grown into a beloved fixture in the region’s arts scene, showcasing dramatic and comedic works that reflect local talent, collaborative spirit, and community engagement.

This year’s calendar is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious yet, with the return of the highly popular theatre restaurant. A night that transforms the Ingham Bowls Club into a warm, convivial space where patrons enjoy a gourmet meal alongside a theatrical performance. It’s a unique night out that blends gastronomy with storytelling and invites the audience to be part of the fun—an experience that continues to draw strong support from the community.

A major focus for the group in 2026 is fostering the next generation of performers and theatre lovers. Building on initiatives like the children’s theatre program launched in 2025, which provided a 10-week intensive experience in performance and stagecraft for young participants, the Ingham Theatre Group has expanded its offerings.

These learning opportunities include acting and improvisation workshops, stagecraft and technical theatre sessions, and youth-specific performance projects. The group’s junior and youth theatre divisions are designed to engage children and teenagers, offering them a supportive environment to build confidence, teamwork, and artistic skills, all culminating in performances that showcase their talents to family and friends.

President Alan Giles says that the 2026 season is about deepening community involvement and broadening access to the arts. “We’re thrilled with how the group has blossomed,” Giles said. “From our traditional stage productions to our immersive theatre restaurant nights and the vibrant energy of our junior and youth theatre programs, there’s something for everyone this year. It’s a celebration of creativity and connection—and we can’t wait to share it with Ingham and the wider region.”

With its blend of performances, workshops, and community engagement, the Ingham Theatre Group continues to be a dynamic force in North Queensland’s cultural landscape. Whether you’re a lifelong theatre fan or looking for a fun night out—or even a young person ready to take the stage—there’s plenty to look forward to in 2026.
