Did You Know? Halifax’s Mango Avenue Is Heritage-Listed

Shade, but make it historic. Halifax’s Row of Street Trees on Macrossan Street — mostly mango trees planted around 1885 — is Queensland Heritage-listed for its cultural significance. What started as practical heat relief evolved into a leafy community lounge room. For generations, these trees shaded shopfronts, schoolkids and neighbours swapping stories in the afternoon cool. Today, they still frame the town beautifully, with classic buildings and the Herbert River Museum nearby, tying together sugar, settlement and everyday life. It’s proof that some of the best planning decisions ripen over time. Stroll beneath the canopy, snap the symmetry, and remember: good ideas, like good mangoes, age beautifully. Ingham Theatre Group Juniors Return This May

Ingham Theatre Group Juniors Return This May

The Ingham Theatre Group is delighted to announce the return of its Juniors program, kicking off on Saturday, 9 May, offering young people across the Hinchinbrook region the chance to explore theatre in a fun, supportive environment. Open to participants aged 9 to 13, the program will cover a range of theatrical skills including performance, improvisation, and creative development, with script writing introduced as one of the many ways participants can bring their ideas to life on stage. Designed to build confidence, teamwork, and creativity, the sessions provide a welcoming space for young people of all experience levels. The program is free to attend (excluding the standard membership fee). Junior Theatre Director and teacher Kimberley Veltmeyer said the program is about giving young people the opportunity to explore every aspect of theatre. “This program is about helping young people find their voice, whether that’s through acting, creating, or writing. Script writing is just one of the many ways they can express themselves and be part of something special.” The Juniors program will run weekly, with participants working towards future performance opportunities as part of the Ingham Theatre Group’s community productions. To register, please email secretary@inghamtheatregroup.org.au. For more information, please contact Ingham Theatre Group via their social media channels or website. Crushers Take The Loss

Crushers Take The Loss

The Herbert River Crushers travelled to Townsville on Sunday and came up against Centrals who were too strong in all 3 grades. The Centrals Tigers side were up 34 - nil with 20 minutes to go in the match before Herbert River got on the board. Utility player Kynan Purdy, winger Bailey Skipper and backrower William Trethaway scored tries while captain & five eighth Dylan Gaggiano kicked 2 goals to give the Crushers a glimmer of hope, but the Tigers scored 2 more tries, one of which was converted to hand the Crushers their first A-Grade loss of the season. In Reserve Grade Centrals had gotten out to lead 12 nil before the Crushers scored either side of halftime with front rower Matty Chiesa pushed 2 defenders off to score first. With winger Riley Dickson's conversion, the Crushers went into the break 12 - 6 down. Soon after halftime halfback Keith Kyle stepped through the defence and the Crushers had a glimmer of hope to be down 12 - 10. Unfortunately for the Crushers Centrals scored 3 more tries to runaway with the game 28 - 10. Under 19s coach Annan Whittington advised the team started well and were in the grind for the opening 10 minutes but could not keep the intensity up for the entire half, centre Evandah Bann crossed just before half time and after halfback Hezekiah Nona converted it left them 18-6 down. Injury and an inability to stay engaged mentally for the 2nd half, meant Centrals ran away with the result 32 - 6. Whittington challenged the team in the dressing sheds at full time to get their preparation right and quickly adjust to the intensity of senior rugby league before playing competition leaders, Brothers in a fortnight. Multiple St Teresa’s College boys should be available for selection for that match, which should be some very welcome players to bolster their backline. Nona was named Players Player while hooker Aiden Stedman, centre Marsat Newman, five eighth Riley Morris and fullback Mitch Maher were all outstanding in defeat. There are no games next weekend. The Crushers next play Brothers in Townsville on Sunday, 10th May. Contributed with thanks by Peter Reitano.

Roy Orbison Show Takes Ingham’s Centre Stage

March 10, 2026

Award winning singer Damien Leith is set to bring a very special show to Ingham, showcasing the wonderful music of Roy Orbison. This show however, is far more than just a tribute, encompassing the music of Orbison’s circle such as the Travelling Wilburys as well as special new tracks co-written with Joe Melson – Roy Orbison’s long-time collaborator.

The show is a long time in the making and was formed through incredible circumstances, as an Australian Idol performance of Orbison’s song ‘Crying’, attracted the attention of his widow all the way in Nashville. This led to a series of life-changing events in which Damien was ingratiated into Orbison’s inner circle.

“She called me and said she liked my version. She liked how I made it my own. Three years later she asked me to fly over to Nashville to record an album of his songs in my style to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday”, said Damien.

“It was a huge honour. I got to work with a whole bunch of people associated with Roy Orbison.”

As he got acquainted with Orbison’s circle, Damien met Joe Melson, co-writer of some of Orbison’s biggest hits. The two begun a fruitful collaboration, writing songs that are set to appear on the new tour.

“We’ve written a bunch of songs. When people hear it, they get a sense of that era of music, but it also has a new spin”.

The performance is a special solo acoustic showcase. One voice, one guitar, and one incredible repertoire.

“The stripped back nature of the show grants a lot of freedom in the performance. It’s weird – I’ve done shows with a full orchestra but at the same time I found I’m enjoying myself more in these really intimate settings”.

New to the region, Damien is incredibly excited to perform in Ingham for the first time.

“I’ve grown up in regional areas. The reception to music is always really good. Really wholesome.”

Speaking to Damien, we reflected on the amazing legacy of Roy Orbison, as his music continues to receive praise six decades after it was released.

“People still buy CDs. They still come to shows. There are loads of people playing his stuff in different formats. He has a unique voice, and his songwriting was so different.”

Damien Leith promises a night you won’t forget.

COUNTDOWN TO COMEDY

March 10, 2026

The calendar has ticked over to March and rehearsals are well underway for the Ingham Theatre Group’s first offering of 2026. “In Good Audience” is the moniker for a collection of short plays and sketches sure to tickle the collective funny bone.

Familiar faces will be joined by some enthusiastic newcomers to present a variety of content with the unifying theme of good fun. For the first time, the production heads out to Forrest Beach and the spacious Progress Hall with evening performances on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th commencing at 7pm and a first-ever matinee on the Saturday at 2pm.

Doors will open an hour before commencement, and refreshments will be available.

Tickets are available online at hinchinbrooktickets.com.au and at the door. Adult entrance is $20 and the student, senior and concession price a mere $10. And, as one character remarks in the first play – the best part of going to the theatre is that there are no ads! Except, perhaps, a reminder that the ever-popular theatre restaurant season will return in August so there is more fun to look forward to.

See you at the show!

Live Theatre Is Returning To Ingham With Gusto!

March 3, 2026

A lively program of short comedic dramas is currently being rehearsed by your favourite local thespians, with some new faces as well, and will hit the stage at the end of March.

This year the fun moves to the beach - Forrest Beach to be exact – with the Progress Hall being the location. Evening shows will run on Friday and Saturday, 20 and 21 March at 7:00pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday 21, taking to the stage at 2:00pm. Doors open an hour before each performance to take advantage of the refreshments available and, of course, to bag a good position as seats are not allocated on the ticket.

Tickets are currently available online from Hinchinbrook Tickets or can be purchased at the door for $20 per adult or $10 per student, concession, or senior.

Theatre has been an integral part of community life from the ancient Greeks to the throngs that crowded the Globe in Shakespearean times, to the regulars who enjoy the antics of our zany local troupe. If you aren’t yet familiar with the entertainment on offer in our own little patch, make the most of this opportunity to acquaint yourself “In Good Audience”. Arrive an hour early to secure your seats and enjoy the refreshments!

5000 TONES & I FANS ROCK INGHAM

February 24, 2026

Hinchinbrook was buzzing on Friday as award winning Australian artist Tones and I lit up the Ingham Showgrounds, drawing a crowd of about 5,000 people for a night that blended big stage energy with unmistakable country hospitality.

A little rain couldn’t wash away the excitement as Ingham showed up loud, proud and united, proving once again that this community never shies away from a great night out.

The performance came after Tones and I challenged regional towns across Australia to show why she should bring a special one-off show to their community.

HINCHINBROOK STRIKES THE RIGHT TONES AS 5,000 FANS TURN OUT IN FORCE

Hinchinbrook rallied with passion and creativity as shopfronts were transformed, murals appeared across the district, social media lit up with messages of support, and locals shared stories of what makes their region unique. Love shared from world class fishing and thriving birdlife to its proud sugar industry heritage.

That groundswell of community spirit ultimately secured Ingham as the chosen destination.

Ahead of the show, Hinchinbrook Shire Mayor Cr Ramon Jayo — a proud Macknade cane farmer with more than 30 years of experience in local government — officially welcomed Tones and I to the region.

In a gesture reflecting Hinchinbrook’s deep agricultural roots, he presented her with a cane knife, symbolic of farming families who have shaped the district.

Mayor Jayo said the event was a significant moment for Hinchinbrook.

“When an artist like Tones and I comes to Ingham, it’s a big deal for a town like ours,” Mayor Jayo said.

“We’re a hardworking community built on agriculture and small business, and nights like this give people a chance to come together and enjoy something special close to home.

“Seeing families out, kids having fun and local businesses busy — that’s what it’s all about.”

The impact was felt well beyond the stage. Local eateries, cafés and accommodation providers reported strong trade with some experiencing their busiest night in years.

It’s estimated that one Friday night will add an estimated $221,000 to the local Hinchinbrook economy, through increased spend on hospitality, retail, accommodation and event suppliers.

Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism President Mary Brown said the event demonstrated the shire’s capability and potential.

“To host an event of this scale with such a short turnaround — and still achieve the attendance we did — has clearly shown performers what Hinchinbrook is capable of,” Ms Brown said.

“It proves that our shire has the capacity and potential to host and accommodate events of this size well into the future.”

She said the experience had been uplifting for local businesses and the broader community.

“The excitement and enthusiasm we’ve witnessed throughout this process has been an incredible morale booster,” she said.

“This time of year is traditionally commercially slow, the mood can be sombre and negative sentiment often rises. This event has given our community something positive to rally around, and that has been just as valuable as the concert itself.”

Mayor Jayo also extended his gratitude to the wider community and acknowledged the community effort that helped secure the concert.

“When the challenge was put forward, our community didn’t hesitate and a big thank you to Justine Stoddart for kicking it off,” he said.

“Businesses, families, community groups and volunteers all stepped up. That collective effort is what brought Tones and I to Ingham, and it’s something we should be incredibly proud of.”

On behalf of the community, Council extends its thanks to Tones and I, her team, event partners, local businesses, schools, community organisations and every community member who helped bring the night to life.

Young Learners Begin the Year With Colour And Creativity

February 17, 2026

The Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms burst into life this week as students at St Peter’s Catholic School celebrated the start of the school year with a vibrant display of personalised artwork. Each creation told a unique story: handprints and footprints marked their arrival, cupcakes represented their age, and carefully placed matchsticks showed the number of people in their family. Pieces of string illustrated how tall they’ve grown, while brightly coloured flowers highlighted each child's favourite colour. Completing the display, students proudly shared what they are good at. Together, the artworks form a joyful snapshot of a confident and creative learning community and the promise of things to come at St Peter’s.

Threads Exhibition Underway At TYTO

February 17, 2026

On Friday 13th February, Mission Arts iconic ‘Threads’ exhibition opened at Ingham’s TYTO Regional Art Gallery. Produced with the assistance of the Mission Beach Community Arts Association, the threads exhibition has been running in Mission Beach for 10 years.

“I was talking to a previous director, and she asked if I thought of any exhibitions that would be good to travel with to other galleries. I suggested threads”, said Threads Coordinator Sally Moroney.

“I said that if we came down to Hinchinbrook, it would be great to involve local artists from Ingham, so it has the local connection."

The exhibition boasts an extraordinary amount of versatility in its curation.

“The great thing about the exhibition is that even though it’s broadly connected by the theme of fibre and textile, there’s such a variety of techniques that the different artists use,” added Sally.

“There’s basketry, embroidery, hand embroidery, machine embroidery and weaving.”

The exhibition also features experimental and inventive uses of materials for stunning art displays.

“There’s even creations where little abstracts are made out of coconut fibre.”

The gallery features work from the Ghost Net Collective, a special award-winning art group.

“They do amazing artwork from the fishing nets and rope found along the beaches. They work with all the beach debris, fishing nets and rope from around the cape. They help with collecting and making amazing work out of it,” she explained.

“The work they’ve got in there at the moment has won a major prize at the World of Wearable Art in New Zealand, from Wellington. It’s world famous.”

Sally expressed immense gratitude towards the council for their support.

“The council provide this great gallery space. You don’t get that kind of support in a lot of communities. To be able to spread out and fill up this beautiful gallery space is wonderful. The help from gallery stuff is fantastic as well.”

The goal of the Threads exhibition is to highlight work that may otherwise go unrecognised.

“With fibre and textile arts, they’re inclined to be underappreciated. People think it’s just someone stitching at home. They don’t always regard that it’s a really serious art form that can be manifested in so many different ways,” she said.

“Whether it’s pelting basketry, textile work, printing, dyeing or an array of techniques, it can become world class art. When you see beautiful gallery standard fibre and textile art, you really appreciate it. The work just as valuable as canvas paintings or carved statues.”

The Threads exhibition offers a great experience for those with a keen interest in art. It is wonderful to see brilliant works introduced to the Hinchinbrook region.

The exhibition will be on display until the Saturday 14th March, so don’t hesitate to see it before it leaves.

Cardwell Local Spreads Passion For Arts And Creativity

February 17, 2026

Byline: Sebastian Conidi

Tucked away in a small suburban street in Cardwell, there lies a room full of puzzles, paintings and a vast array of creative projects in the process. African animals, Australian wildlife, flowers, patterns, people, shapes and colours. These all fill the workshop as Keith Haack and Maxine Edwards continue to produce creative works, refusing to let age slow them down.

At 90 years of age, Keith is more energised than ever, as he continues to work on complex puzzles and produce interesting works of art. A tough battle with diabetes meant Keith had to move into an aged care facility.

“I went there. I just left everything behind. I was so crook,” said Keith.

But the challenge would prove to be a great opportunity, as Keith used the circumstances to pursue arts and craft.

“I started going around every morning and saying hello to old people. Then I got on to more things. I met this lady, she was a volunteer at the home.”

That lady is Maxine Edwards, who at 71 lives with Keith, as they spend their days sorting through complex puzzles and creating new artworks. After a stint at the home, Keith moved into Maxine’s flat, now the main production studio.

Maxine and Keith are both half blind, with Maxine unfortunately losing her eye to cancer. Despite this, the pair continue to work on their projects, keeping their minds active and focused. Although the collection is growing, they continue to eagerly search for whatever they can get their hands on.

“We get [puzzles] wherever we go”.

Keith is immensely proud of his current projects, which includes a staggering 6000-piece puzzle - their most ambitious challenge yet. The dark pieces and huge set pose a task that may take months but is it exciting to see what will happen once it’s completed.

With a background in building and engineering, Keith has always kept his mind and body active with craft work, however this current endeavour has allowed his creativity to flourish with no signs of slowing down.

Above all, Keith’s greatest hope is that he can get fellow elderly locals to participate.

“It’s important to get people to use their brains”.

Creative tasks such as puzzles, paintings and illustrations can be an incredibly productive way to stay active and keep the mind moving. Keith spoke of the importance and has made a strong call for the community to get involved. He wants more elderly people to join in so that they can keep their mind sharp and focused.

As it the studio continues to grow, it is exciting to see the work being done. If you, or someone you know, may be interested, don’t hesitate to get in contact with Keith himself at: 0429 665 645.

Bissons Electrical People’s Choice Award Announced at 47th Hinchinbrook Art Awards

February 17, 2026

The Bissons Electrical People’s Choice Award at the 47th Hinchinbrook Art Awards has been awarded to The Catch, a painting by 17-year-old artist Hamish Darveniza. The work depicts a jaguar and a caiman engaged in a dramatic struggle, and attracted strong attention from visitors throughout the exhibition.

The painting was noted for its detailed realism and dynamic composition, which resonated with audiences and ultimately secured the popular vote.

Community and Cultural Services Portfolio Councillor Donna Marbelli said community engagement with this year’s exhibition had been particularly strong. She described the winning artwork as bold and full of energy, noting that the People’s Choice Award reflects a genuine public response to work that connects with viewers.

At just 17, Hamish is already building a successful career as an artist with recognition for a number of art works already under his belt.

The Hinchinbrook Art Awards continue to highlight creative talent from across the region and attract significant community interest each year. The event serves as one of North Queensland’s most anticipated cultural events and is hosted at the TYTO Regional Art Gallery in Ingham.

The awards have seen great success over the years, growing steadily in both scale and reputation and cementing their place as a cornerstone of the region’s cultural calendar. Each year, the Hinchinbrook Art Awards attract an increasing number of entries and visitors, reflecting a strong and ongoing appetite for the arts within the community. The exhibition not only provides a professional platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their work, but also encourages dialogue, education, and appreciation of visual art among local audiences.

Supporting the arts in the region is vital to nurturing creative talent, strengthening cultural identity, and enriching community life. Events such as the Hinchinbrook Art Awards help ensure that artists, particularly young and emerging creatives, have opportunities to be seen, valued, and celebrated close to home. They also deliver broader social and economic benefits, drawing visitors to the area and contributing to the vibrancy of local cultural spaces. Continued investment in regional arts affirms their importance as a means of expression, connection, and pride for the community as a whole.
