Bookworms, bargain hunters and lovers of hidden treasures are in for a treat when the much-loved Tully Book Fair returns later this month! Running from Wednesday, 29th July to Saturday, 1st August, from 10am to 2pm each day at the Tully Masonic Centre, the popular community event offers the perfect opportunity to discover a great read while giving thousands of pre-loved books a second life.
What began as a community event has quickly become one of the region’s favourite annual traditions, and organiser Valerie Keenan said the fair's growing popularity reflected the community's love of books and reading.
“As a bookworm of the highest order, the value of reading and sharing books has always been important and it’s wonderful to meet others who share that passion,” she said.
An initiative of the Tully Arts and Cultural Precinct Inc. (TA&CP), all proceeds from the book fair will go towards supporting the organisation's arts and cultural programs. The funding will help TA&CP continue its mission of strengthening community connection, fostering creativity and building a vibrant cultural identity across Tully and its surrounding communities.
“Our efforts are directed to developing a sense of place, fostering civic pride and creating a welcoming space that supports diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging,” said Ms Keenan.
Ms Keenan said she was incredibly grateful for the community's ongoing support, thanking everyone who has donated books, purchased raffle tickets, contributed financially or volunteered their time.
“We are sincerely grateful to those who have provided support for this year’s program,” she expressed.
“This generosity is without precedent and the mark of a community which supports local activities and endeavours which provide benefits.”
Adding to this year's event, visitors will also have the opportunity to browse a special pop-up shop showcasing a collection of unique handmade gifts created by local artisans, alongside a new exhibition celebrating community, creativity and local history.
"This year's beautiful exhibition, themed as 'Tradition, Ritual, Community' recognises 100 years of community service by the Tully Masons and reflects on how the artists consider these themes in their paintings, prints, textiles, weaving, woodwork, photography and installations,” said Ms Keenan.
“The range of work reflects creative talent that has always existed in Far North Queensland, too often without a proper stage on which to be seen.”
Residents are encouraged to donate pre-loved books, board games, CDs and puzzles to the Tully Masonic Centre between 10am and 2pm, Wednesday to Sunday, until Friday, 31st July, helping give cherished items a second life while supporting the local community.
