Hinchinbrook Festival Of Events Strengthens Local Pride And Participation

With the commencement of the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce’s Hinchinbrook Festival of Events, the district has been buzzing with excitement as locals and visitors embraced a huge beginning weekend. The atmosphere has been electric, marking a significant milestone in the region’s ongoing journey of community recovery and resilience following the challenges faced earlier this year. The Chamber has been firmly focused on community recovery since February, and with two major campaigns scheduled to roll out before Christmas, the remainder of 2025 promises to be a turning point for Hinchinbrook. The goal is not only to recover, but to rebuild community connection. The Festival of Events is already proving to be a powerful catalyst for this renewed energy. What started as a small concept drafted on paper quickly evolved into a significant and transformative project. The Hinchinbrook Festival of Events was brought to life through careful planning, collaboration, and an enormous amount of behind the scenes work. The Chamber worked to unify existing community events under one marketing banner, build a fresh brand identity, and develop a new website and social media presence. The past four weeks have been a whirlwind of planning sessions, creative development, media interviews, and coordination across multiple community groups. As launch day arrived, all expectations were surpassed. The Chamber is delighted to share that every event held to date has achieved outstanding success. Attendance numbers, community participation, and positive feedback have exceeded predictions. The Chamber extends sincere appreciation to the Hinchinbrook community for their enthusiasm. The unity displayed reflects the true Hincinbrook Spirit and reinforces the importance of standing together as a community. The Festival has also opened new doors into the tourism space for Hinchinbrook. Advertising has reached audiences outside the district, generating interest from new visitors and helping position the region as a welcoming destination. This aligns strongly with the Chamber’s commitment to community recovery, as tourism brings valuable economic benefits to local businesses, accommodation providers, and hospitality venues. Alongside the Festival activity, the Chamber has also launched its annual Christmas Buy Local initiative, Shop and Win in Hinchinbrook. Following the success of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, this year’s initiative is already tracking toward another outstanding result. The timing works hand in hand with the Festival, encouraging visitors and locals alike to shop within the district and support local businesses, all while entering the draw to win major prizes. The 2025 Shop and Win campaign began on 18 October and will run through to 20 December. Every purchase made within the 4850 postcode gives shoppers the chance to enter. Simply write your name and contact number on your entry ticket or receipt and place it into one of the designated collection boxes around the district. The pace of the past few months has been significant, and the Chamber is deeply grateful for the ongoing support of its members and the achievements that have been accomplished through teamwork. Residents can stay informed about Chamber initiatives by following the socials or visiting the website www.hinchinbrookchamber.com.au

Airlie Beach Festival Of Music Where The Music Never Ends And The Holiday Just Begins

October 9, 2025

It’s easy to think you know what a music festival is. A vast, dusty field, hours of queuing, and the logistical puzzle of seeing your favourite bands. But in a picturesque corner of the Whitsundays, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music has completely rewritten the script, transforming the concept from a penned-in weekend to a laid-back, three-day music holiday. This isn't just an event; it's an invitation to experience world-class live music in a place that's as much a star of the show as the artists themselves.

The first thing that sets this festival apart is the heart-stopping backdrop. While other festivals offer a view of a stage and a sea of heads, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music main tent at the Whitsunday Sailing Club gives you a front-row seat to an endless vista of turquoise water, bobbing boats, and the majestic Whitsunday Islands. It’s an immersion of the senses: the sound of a roaring guitar blending with the gentle lapping of the waves, the energy of the crowd mixed with the relaxed, tropical sea breeze. This is a festival that embraces its location, making every moment feel like a holiday.

The music itself is a carefully curated journey. The festival's lineup is a powerful mix of Australian rock royalty and exciting new talent. From legendary acts that have defined generations to emerging artists discovered through initiatives like the Passport to Airlie (Australia’s largest original music initiative), there’s a genuine thrill of discovery around every corner.

It doesn’t stop there, with 60 acts in 14 venues across town, the music takes over the entire Airlie Beach community. This "town takeover" format means you can wander from a beachfront bar to a cafe, and from a lively pub to the pumping main stage, all without ever losing the rhythm.

And the value? It's unmatched. A 3 day pass grants you access to not only three full days of performances but also the included welcome and after parties, extending the good times from Thursday right through to Monday. With a 3-day pass priced at just $325, you’re looking at a festival experience for less than the cost of three average concert tickets.

The focus here is on creating memories, not logistical headaches. The free bus transport from Whitsunday Transit, helping you hop between venues and home again safely and without a worry all day and into the night.

In an industry of big events in an isolated paddock, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music is an intimate, vibrant, and perfectly paced celebration of sound in one of Australia's most beautiful destinations. It’s more than a festival. It’s the ultimate music holiday, with a range of accommodation packages from camping to 5-star, and it’s calling your name.

Bullocky Tom’s Legacy Lives On In New Mural

October 9, 2025

Locally loved artist, Katie Louise, has graced the region once again, painting a beautiful mural on the wall of the infamous Frosty Mango building located 40km South of Ingham along the mighty Bruce Highway.

Hailing from Townsville, Katie’s paint brushes have coloured many surfaces across North Queensland where she has artistically captured the unique qualities of several communities including the Atherton Tablelands, Charters Towers, and now Cardwell.

Katie’s recent piece within the shire tells the tale of Bullocky Tom, a local pioneer who resided within the area in the 1800s alongside his wife Ruth, and four children. Since his death 128 years ago, Bullocky Tom has become a local legend with many noting Crystal Creek’s popular Bullocky Tom’s Track as a lasting reminder of the Irish man’s time spent within the region.

Bullocky Tom, formerly known as Thomas Edward Andrews, was born in Wicklow, Ireland in 1848. He lived at the junction of Big Crystal Creek and Little Crystal Creek for the majority of his life where he raised his children and worked a mail route through what’s now known as the Bullocky Tom’s Track. The trail connects the top of the Paluma Range with the rest of the coastal escarpment and quickly became the second busiest pack-track of it’s time, allowing miners to transport hundreds of thousands of supplies and tin between neighbouring sites. After Bullocky Tom’s death on the 13th of January 1897, he was laid to rest at Mount Ruth at a grave subtly marked by two orange trees roughly 800 meters from Mutarnee, and a small creek now called Bullocky Tom’s Creek.

Although it’s changed vastly since the 1800s, experienced hikers can still explore approximately 15 kilometres of the grade four trail through the Paluma Range National Park, beginning from the Paluma Dam, and finishing at Crystal Creek’s Paradise Waterhole.

With the mural now complete, Katie has received plenty of praise from locals passing her by whilst painting one of her most history rich pieces yet.

“The Bullocky Tom mural took me around 10 days to complete, and throughout the process I was met with so much encouragement and positivity from the public,” Katie explained.

“It’s been really heartwarming to hear how much the piece resonates with people - even some of Bullocky Tom’s descendants reached out to express their gratitude, which meant a lot to me.”

Pop on over to visit the Frosty Mango this August and witness Katie’s work for yourself!

“It’s been such a special project to be part of, and I’m really proud of how it all came together.”

Experience The Magic Of The Burdekin Water Festival This September

August 4, 2025

In just six short weeks, one of the state’s longest running annual celebrations will return to the streets of the Burdekin Shire for a memorable day of fun, festivities, food and fabulous entertainment!

Just a few hours’ drive South of the Hinchinbrook Shire, the Burdekin Water Festival will come alive on Saturday the 6th of September to celebrate the township’s abundance of water and rich agricultural sector with a series of events scheduled throughout the afternoon and into the night in the heart of Ayr itself.

The official Queensland Country Bank Grand Parade will line Queen Street from end to end with an array of magnificent floats, machinery, marching bands, and community groups for all to enjoy from 4:30pm onwards. Over the past couple of months, countless local businesses, schools, community groups, and organisations have been hard at work, decorating their floats to bring the magical 2025 theme of “Bon Voyage – Roam the Globe” to life for festival goers to admire from the footpath.

The procession will then be followed by a memorable Mardi Gras overflowing with live entertainment, games, amusement rides, side-show alley favourites, face painting, Melville’s Petting Zoo and a wide variety of market stalls.

2025’s Burdekin Water Festival will also stage the debut of Burdekin Eats, a new international culinary experience inviting attendees to experience a wide array of foods from across the globe! In line with the festival’s travel theme, Queen Street will be filled with tastes, sights, and sounds from countries far and wide to create a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere like never before.

Additional festival favourites will also make a return this year including the Tug-O-War Competition, where teams will battle it out for the coveted title of Grand Champion! Winning announcements for the Garden Competition, Window Display Competition, and the drawing of the Major Raffle will also take place during the evening.

At 7pm sharp, all eyes will turn to the Main Stage, where judges and committee members will crown the Winning Junior Ambassadors, bringing the 2025 Ambassador Program to a close and marking a key highlight in the festival calendar.

Building on the success of last year’s iconic come back, the Burdekin Water Festival Committee is hopeful this year’s event will be bigger, better and more brilliant than ever!

Junior Theatre Takes The Stage

July 29, 2025

On Saturday, the 26th of July, the Junior division of the Ingham Theatre Group debut in their first matinee. After 10 weeks of work-shopping improvisations, theatre sports, performance technique, stage craft, and most importantly fun and friendship, the Juniors stepped up and performed the wondrous adventure that was 'Princesses of a Feather'.

Together, the cursed princesses-turned-birds, defeated the evil knight Sir Glimmerpants with the help of Charlie Cowgirl Cat In A Cape, while the narrator kept us all engaged with her dramatic reading. After the princesses regained their human-hood, the Macarena was danced in celebration, and awards were handed out to  Cooper, Skylah, Ebony, Mia, Lily, Florence, Audy, Holy-Catherine and Jamie-Lee, the bright young stars.

The Ingham Community Theatre looks to have a shining future with such Juniors talent treading the boards. If you would like your child to grace the spotlights, contact the Ingham Theatre Group secretary and express interest in the September workshops on: secretary@inghamtheatregroup.org.au

Aliens Are Landing In Cardwell This August!

October 9, 2025

See You-F-O There!

The countdown is on for one of Australia’s most unique and exciting events. The Australian UFO Festival, returning to Cardwell from Friday, 8th to Sunday, 10th August!

Whether you're a believer, a sceptic, or just love a good party, there’s something for everyone during this cosmic weekend that blends science, mystery, community, and fun.

What started as a quirky local market day has grown into a full weekend of activities, drawing visitors from across the country to experience everything from expert talks to telescope tours, costumed aliens, and glow-in-the-dark parties along the foreshore.

The festival is anchored by two major themes: the fun and playful side with markets, crab races, costume parties, and the iconic Alien Invasion Foreshore Party, and a serious space for inquiry through the C-Files Forum, a two-day conference featuring respected researchers, experiencers, and speakers from around Australia and abroad.

This year’s C-Files Forum boasts an extraordinary lineup, including investigative journalist Ross Coulthart, UFO researcher Bill Chalker, contactee and psychic Andrew Radziewicz, and podcast hosts like Anthony Goodall (Encounters Down Under) and Triffon Peart (Unlocking the Code), among many others. Attendees will hear firsthand accounts of encounters, deep dives into ancient mysteries, and discussions about government disclosure, consciousness, and extraterrestrial life. It’s a rare opportunity for those curious about the unknown to come together in a welcoming, safe, and open-minded space.

The festival kicks off on Friday with a mobile planetarium experience for local schools and the community, followed by a stargazing evening guided by professional astronomers and two large telescopes. On Saturday and Sunday, the town comes alive with market stalls, family-friendly entertainment, live music, kids' activities, and surprises galore! Including costumed aliens roaming the foreshore and a visit from E.T. himself at the Op Shop’s iconic display.

Festival founder and organiser Thea Ormonde says the event is all about connection, “We bring people together — locals, travellers, believers, and the just-plain-curious — and create a space where everyone can have fun and feel welcome,” she says. “It’s about community, wonder, and just letting go and enjoying the mystery.”

Visitors are encouraged to book accommodation early, grab forum tickets in advance, and dust off their best intergalactic costumes. Whether you're chasing answers or just chasing crabs, Cardwell is the place to be this August!

For the full program and ticket information, visit: www.australianufofestival.com.au and follow @australianufofestival on Facebook for updates, sneak peeks and out-of-this-world announcements.

FOLK, FAMILY AND WARMTH

At Halifax’s Festival Of Small Halls

On Wednesday, 9 July, the Halifax Progress Association hosted the Festival of Small Halls winter tour. This annual July festival begins in Cooktown and winds its way down the coast, ending at Macleay Island.

Supported by local act Michelle from Halifax, Champagne Weather and Charm of Finches delivered a true communal atmosphere, with each band a family act and the audience filled with friends and family from across the district.

Michelle, a performer on the night and one of the organisers from the Halifax Progress Association, thought the evening met all hopes.

"It absolutely exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I have been very lucky to have some incredible people help along the way. So I am not the whole and sole person of this, and I couldn't have done it without my team from the Halifax Progress Association."

She felt the event was well supported by the local community: "I'm very, very happy, and I think everybody really enjoyed their night tonight. It was a very classy event."

With comfortable sofas, soft lamplight, local wines and shared platters of food, the night offered the sights and sounds of relaxation and intimate folk music, successfully weaving through all the senses.

Cuteness At Mt Fox Markets

July 8, 2025

After an upward climb of a windy road and across a stretch of gravel, you come to the Mt Fox camp ground. Here you will find locals and visitors alike enjoying the grounds in 'flea-market' type fashion. Trestle tables of home-made breads, knick-knacks and seedlings.

The NT Wildlife Rescue was in attendance manning the bar and caring for their adorable baby wallabies, paws and ears peeking out of their cosy pouches. There was also many dogs to pet, sausage sizzle, and a playground for the children to play on, and if you wanted some quiet time, a book-swap had plenty stories to share.

There's no stall fees, so if you want to operate a the Mt Fox markets simply bring your own table and set yourself up!
