What If The Problem Isn’t The Problem?

As occupational therapists who work with children every day, we’re often asked for our opinion on the best way to help kids.

The question is usually something like, “How do I get my child to concentrate/clean up after themselves/eat more veggies/brush their teeth?”

Our answer often surprises people.

As occupational therapists, we don’t just consider the task itself. We consider the child’s whole life.

Ask us about concentration and we might start asking about sleep and play. Tooth brushing troubles? We might ask how your child feels about clothes with tags.

The questions can seem completely unrelated, but there’s usually a reason we’re asking.

OTs are pros at zooming out to see the whole picture, then diving back in to help with a specific goal. In the process, we sometimes bring two seemingly unrelated things together to create that “A-ha!” moment for you and your child.

And it’s not just at home. We work with teachers and educators too, looking at the whole classroom and noticing what might be getting in the way.

If a child you live or work with is having a hard time and you can’t figure out why, perhaps it’s time to ask an OT. They might just make a connection you hadn’t considered.
