Recycling Checks Underway In Lower Herbert

Residents across the Lower Herbert area may notice new activity on their recycling collection days, with Hinchinbrook Shire Council conducting a Bin Tagging Education Program from 10th August to 7th September 2026.

As part of the program, Council officers will visually inspect yellow-lidded recycling bins placed out for collection. Households will then receive a feedback tag indicating how well recyclable materials have been sorted and whether contamination has been identified.

The program is intended to help residents improve their recycling practices, increase the amount of material recovered and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Hinchinbrook Shire currently disposes of approximately 4,000 tonnes of kerbside waste each year. Council estimates that diverting just 10 per cent of recyclable material from red-lidded general waste bins into recycling bins could reduce landfill waste by up to 400 tonnes each year.

The tagging program is focused on education rather than enforcement, giving households practical feedback to help them make better recycling decisions.

Inspections will take place on the collection days of Monday 24th August 2026, and Monday 7th September 2026.

The six-week program will include a follow-up assessment approximately six months later. Another six-week tagging round is planned for later in 2026, with follow-up activities continuing into early 2027.

Residents are encouraged to check what can and cannot be placed in their yellow-lidded recycling bin before collection day.
