Students in Years 3-6 recently immersed themselves in the exciting world of poetry, exploring a wide range of poetic forms, techniques and styles as part of their Poetry Unit. Throughout the term, students investigated the key elements of poetry, including structure, rhythm, rhyme, sound devices and figurative language, while developing an understanding of how these features influence and engage an audience.

Students learnt about a variety of poetic forms, including acrostic poems, couplets, shape poems, quatrains, cinquains, limericks, haikus and ballads. They also explored figurative language techniques such as similes, metaphors and personification, alongside sound devices including alliteration and onomatopoeia, just to name a few.
Inspired by the many styles of poetry they encountered, students created, refined and published their own original poems. The unit culminated in a vibrant Poetry Showcase, where students proudly presented a poem of their choice to members of their families and the school community and shared their published work.

The Showcase was a wonderful celebration of creativity, confidence and self-expression, providing students with a memorable and enriching experience in the world of poetry.
