QUEENSLANDERS URGED TO REPORT SICK OR DEAD WILD BIRDS

Queenslanders are being urged to remain vigilant and report any sick or dead wild birds after the state's first suspected case of H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (bird flu) was detected.

The suspected case was identified in a deceased petrel that washed ashore on Moreton Island. Initial testing has returned a suspected positive result, with samples now undergoing further testing at the CSIRO's Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness for final confirmation.

There have been no detections of the virus in native birds or poultry in Queensland, and there is no evidence of large-scale deaths among animals. The Queensland Government said the risk to human health remains unchanged and reassured the public that it is safe to continue eating chicken meat and eggs.

The announcement comes as at least one Hinchinbrook resident has already taken precautions, reporting a washed-up dead bird found about one kilometre north of the Forrest Beach boat ramp after spotting it while out walking.

Anyone who sees sick or dead birds is urged to avoid contact and report the sighting immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
