Fermented foods have been enjoyed around the world for centuries, and they're now gaining attention for their impressive health benefits. Foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi are made through a natural fermentation process, where beneficial bacteria break down sugars and produce probiotics.
Probiotics are often called "good bacteria" because they help support a healthy balance of microbes in the digestive system. A healthy gut plays an important role in digestion, nutrient absorption and immune function. Many people find that including fermented foods in their diet can help reduce bloating, improve digestion and promote regular bowel movements.

Sauerkraut, made from fermented cabbage, is rich in fibre, vitamins C and K, and beneficial bacteria. Kimchi, a traditional Korean dish, offers similar benefits while also containing ingredients such as garlic, ginger and chilli, which provide additionalantioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
As with any dietary change, people with certain medical conditions or dietary restrictions should seek advice from a healthcare professional or accredited practising dietitian if they're unsure whether fermented foods are suitable for them.
If you're new to fermented foods, start with small portions to allow your digestive system to adjust. Look for refrigerated, unpasteurised products, as these are more likely to contain live cultures. Ingham Wholelife Pharmacy stocks a range of fermented products, so there’s plenty to try!
Adding a spoonful of sauerkraut to a sandwich or enjoying kimchi alongside stir-fries is an easy and flavourful way to support your gut health every day.
