Mission Arts marked its 15th anniversary in style, celebrating the major achievement with a vibrant awards exhibition that drew in a strong crowd on opening night.
Founded on 5th March 2009, The Mission Beach Community Arts Centre (MBCAC) had a core group of dedicated people who applied and won the Australian Government Jobs Stimulus Package grant. This enabled them to obtain a lease from the Cassowary Coast Regional Council for the site at MARCS Park.

Cyclone Yasi bought setbacks in 2011 but the community’s resilience prevailed. By 26th August 2011 the Mission Beach Community Arts Centre facility opened, much to the towns delight.
The achievement was meaningful for founding members Linda Hannah and Sue Shannon.
“We’re both very proud” said Sue Shannon.
“I remember actually recieving the successful grant in my personal letterbox at home and I just thought ‘oh my god’. So we had a big party to celebrate.”
Mission Arts became an Incorporated Association on 19th June 2010 and continues to rely on volunteers, grants and donations to operate.
“It has such a strong community and volunteer base, its really fantastic to see,” Linda said.
The organization’s success reflects a community who deeply value the arts. It wouldn’t be what it is without the valiant efforts of the volunteers who donate their time, the artists who entrust their pieces to be exhibited and to the sponsors who contribute financially to the awards funds.

The anniversary exhibition runs from 14th August to 22nd September, with Member for Hill Shane Knuth set to announce the People’s Choice Award Winner at the closing night celebration.
The exhibition showcases 2D and 3D work and includes a variety of mediums on display. Mission Arts is open daily 10am - 2pm.
