The future of Bingil Bay Campground is taking shape, with Djiru Warrangburra Aboriginal Corporation outlining its long-term vision for the popular coastal site following a recent community consultation on July 28th.
The Registered Native Title Body Corporate for the Djiru People has managed the campground since May 2023, with its agreement recently extended until June 2027. Following feedback gathered during the consultation, the corporation says it remains committed to working alongside residents, businesses and campground users to guide the site's future while preserving its unique character.
“It was wonderful to see so many community members, neighbours, government representatives and supporters come together to learn more about Djiru Warrangburra Aboriginal Corporation, the management of the campground, and to share your ideas, questions and feedback,” said a Djiru Warrangburra Aboriginal Corporation spokesperson.
“Your participation, honest conversations and ongoing support are invaluable as we work together to protect this special place, improve the campground, and ensure it remains a welcoming and safe destination, while most importantly, respecting the cultural and environmental values of Djiru Country.”
Cassowary Coast Regional Council said it would continue to play an important role as trustee of the reserve land, while Djiru remains responsible for the day-to-day management of the campground. Council will continue to support the site's long-term planning, appropriate improvements and sustainable operation, while working with Djiru on matters including access, safety and community communication.
Council said it also remained responsible for the adjacent road reserve and would continue to manage that area, while supporting the Traditional Owners through grant opportunities for planning, infrastructure and operational needs where appropriate.
“Council and Djiru will continue to work together in a practical and collaborative way on matters relating to the campground and surrounding area as they have done since the commencement of their initial contract in May of 2023,” said a Cassowary Coast Regional Council spokesperson.
Council also confirmed it would continue to manage the adjacent road reserve while supporting the Traditional Owners through grant opportunities for planning, infrastructure and operational needs where appropriate.
"Council values the opportunity to support Djiru's management of the campground and to work alongside the local Traditional Owners to help ensure the park remains viable and well managed into the future."
