Celebrating 30 Years Of Care, Connection And Community

Thirty years ago, the story of selectability began with a simple idea: people experiencing mental health challenges should be supported to live meaningful lives in their community.

What started in 1996 as Supported Options In Lifestyle Access Service (SOLAS), a small pilot project operating from a rental property in Oonoonba, has grown into one of regional Queensland’s largest community service organisations, supporting thousands of people and families across a diverse footprint.

Ingham has played an important role in that journey.

Long before establishing a permanent presence in the region, selectability was supporting local people to improve their wellbeing through a range of outreach programs.  

As community needs grew, so did selectability's commitment to the region, resulting in the purchase of the iconic Casra's Tavern, that quickly became a vibrant community hub connecting people through group activities and tailored support.

When devastating floods hit the region in 2025, that commitment was put to the test. Despite extensive damage to the facility, the team continued supporting locals and played an active role in the community’s recovery.  

More than a year on, selectability continues to operate from a temporary location while renovations are underway, with plans to create an even larger and more welcoming space for the community.

Regional coordinator Julie Ross said the timing was especially meaningful.

"As we celebrate 30 years of caring for people and communities across Queensland, we're also investing in the future of our Ingham hub so that even more locals can connect, participate and access support when they need it," Julie said.

"Over the years, we've become part of the Ingham community. We've supported people through challenging times, including disaster recovery, but we've also shared in the everyday moments that matter most, whether that's a group activity, a community BBQ or simply helping someone feel connected.

"We're excited about what's ahead and proud to continue building on our commitment to the Ingham region."

While much has changed since those early days in Oonoonba, selectability's focus remains the same: creating opportunities for people to connect, thrive and be part of their community.
