In early 2026, a male cassowary and five healthy chicks were photographed at Charley’s Chocolate Farm near Bingil Bay, bordering Djiru National Park.
Five eggs can be laid in a clutch, but seeing all five chicks survive and remain together is unusual. The family was described as the first five-chick cassowary sighting recorded around Mission Beach since 2015.
The chicks, sometimes called “stripies” because of their distinctive stripes, were spotted from November and continued to thrive into the new year.
It is the kind of wildlife encounter that makes the Cassowary Coast different: you don't need a wildlife park to see something genuinely remarkable. Spot them: cassowarycoasttourism.com.au
