Cassowary Coast Library and Museum Services invites the community to come together for a special open day celebrating local stories, shared strength and the reopening of the refurbished Cardwell Library and Heritage Precinct.
Stronger Together: Celebrating Community Resilience will be held on Friday 9 October from 10.00am to 4.00pm, with free activities taking place across the Cardwell Library, JC Hubinger Memorial Museum, Heritage Precinct and surrounding green spaces.
The day will begin with an official opening, followed by the Voices of Cardwell Conversation Café and community morning tea. Residents are encouraged to share their memories, photographs and experiences of Cardwell, including stories of Cyclones Yasi, Larry and Winifred and the community connections formed through recovery.
Visitors can explore the recently refurbished facilities through guided library, museum and heritage tours, view a special cyclone commemoration exhibition presented by the Cardwell & District Historical Society, and connect with Council representatives, emergency services and community organisations.
Practical activities will include disaster preparedness information, a Get Ready Queensland dashboard workshop, digital workshops and friendly Tech Help. Families can also enjoy interactive children’s activities and an after-school community afternoon tea on the lawn from 3.00pm.
The event will recognise the invaluable contribution of local volunteers and provide opportunities to learn more about community services, volunteering and disaster preparedness.
The refurbishment works were made possible through the jointly funded Commonwealth–State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. This community event is also supported by the Australian Library and Information Association through its Social Cohesion funding program.
