On 12 July 1896 John Lely, Honorary Secretary of the Halifax Planters’ Club wrote to the ‘Queenslander’ newspaper with suggestions on how to help eradicate the cane grub infestation. In Halifax the farmers had a self-imposed a levy of 7shillings per acre for beetle destruction measures.
