Etty Bay is one of the few places in Australia where visitors regularly encounter the endangered Southern Cassowary in the wild. These towering birds can stand nearly two metres tall and play a vital role in maintaining rainforest health by spreading seeds across vast distances.
Unlike a zoo encounter, sightings here happen on the bird's terms. One moment you're admiring the beach, the next a cassowary strolls out of the rainforest and across the sand like it owns the place.
