The February 2025 floods left an undeniable mark on Hinchinbrook Shire, affecting every corner of the community and testing resilience like never before. In response, Hinchinbrook Shire Council is introducing a new category in the 2026 Australia Day Awards — the Flood Hero Recognition — to honour the countless individuals who selflessly stood up to support their neighbours and help rebuild our community. Mayor Ramon Jayo said the overwhelming spirit shown during those difficult days. “These floods impacted us all, and throughout the crisis, ordinary people showed extraordinary kindness and courage,” Mayor Jayo said. “They didn’t seek recognition; they acted out of love and a deep sense of responsibility to their community. “This award is about recognising their quiet heroism and the strength they gave us when we needed it most. “This is the community’s chance to thank those who gave so much without expecting anything in return.” The Flood Hero Recognition category is unique. It’s not about a single winner but about honouring the many hands that held us together. Council invites the community to nominate anyone who inspired them from volunteers to emergency responders to neighbours who simply helped in small but meaningful ways. From celebrating outstanding citizens of all ages, to recognising cultural and sporting achievements, community events, and acts of heroism during the 2025 floods — there’s a category for every kind of contribution. Judges may reassign nominations to ensure they’re recognised in the most fitting category. Nominations have now been extended until 5.00pm on Tuesday 6 January 2026. Visit https://www.hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au/community-environment/australia-day-celebrations/how-to-nominate/ for more information, visit the Council office at 25 Lannercost Street, Ingham or call 4774 4600. Award recipients will be celebrated at the Australia Day event on 26 January 2026 at the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall.

The Ingham Squash Club wrapped up its Season 2 competition on Thursday night with an exciting grand final showcase that drew support from local players and spectators. In the A Men’s division, the Dolphins emerged victorious after a tightly contested matchup against the Cowboys. The Dolphins secured the title two games to one, displaying consistency and resilience in a spirited final. Team captain, Liam Fascetti, thanked his fellow players, Brendan Wallis and Niko Dillon, for helping him steer the team to victory. Dolphin’s captain, Jordan Di Bella was unable to play due to injury and was reliant on number 2 seed Mario Di Bella to play in the captain’s position. Di Bella won his game against Wallis but was outplayed by Fascetti in his second game. Number three seed, Dillon beat upcoming star, James Smith to take the team to victory. The A Mixed grand final delivered just as much excitement, with the Hawks overcoming the Lorikeets in a competitive clash. The Hawks’ strong all-round performance proved decisive as they claimed this season’s mixed title. Hawks players, Brendan Seri (captain), James Smith and Braydon Rynne won their way to the title by defeating Lorikeets’ Ally Rhodes (captain), Kara Nash, Callan Brown and Sophee Lepinath. Both teams finished on two matches each, but the games won ratio of eight to four solidified the Hawks win. During the presentation, young club member, James Smith was crowned Most Improved Player of the Season. The club congratulated all finalists and participants for a successful season and looks forward to an even bigger competition next year. (Contributed with thanks by Kim Di Bella)

Despite the rain in Ingham, the Parkrunners were out this weekend enjoying a morning of exercise. Palm Creek saw visitors from all over; Cairns, Rockhampton, Brisbane, Adelaide, and even the Red Earth Running squad came down from Cardwell to give Palm Creek a go. Two of them achieved PBs along with three others and a new runner took out the top spot this week.
Luckily for Cardwell, the rain stayed away. They had a turnout of 6 parkrunners, and one achieved a PB. It was only regulars this week but that made for a very cosy running experience as they all finished the course quite close together in time.
Remember, you can grab a coffee or post-parkrun brekkie with friends afterwards. Dry out at a local cafe and warm those hands around a steaming cup of hot chocolate with the kids.

The Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre (HCSC) Seniors Morning Coffee Club proudly hosted an amazing Christmas in July celebration, bringing together seniors from across our region for a day of good food, fun, and festive cheer. What began as a planned gathering for 80 quickly grew to a sold-out event, welcoming 120 guests who filled the Noorla Bowls Club in Ingham to capacity. Our usual Coffee Club of around 40 members more than tripled in size for this special day, with the added delight of 21 visitors from Rollingstone Neighbourhood Centre and groups from Lifelong Supports and Blue Care.
These valuable partnerships and events help create meaningful social connections and reduce isolation among our seniors, something our Centre is deeply committed to. Adding an informative touch, we were joined by two wonderful representatives from ADA Australia, who gave an insightful presentation about their fully funded advocacy services for older persons, highlighting vital support available within our community.
It was a feast to remember as guests were treated to a traditional Christmas meal, lovingly prepared by the talented team at Oasis Café. The generous spread featured baked ham, roasted pork, lamb, and vegetables, pasta and salad, and a crowd-favourite lasagne made by our very own HCSC Men’s Group facilitator, Angelo — a true kitchen whiz! To finish, a classic trifle provided a sweet end to a hearty meal.
The holiday spirit was alive and well, with many attendees arriving dressed in their best Christmas-themed outfits. Best Dressed prizes went to Veronica as The Grinch, Jimmy as Woody, Carol as Mrs Claus, Gordon as Christmas Bob Marley, and young Tara, whose festive energy lit up the room. The celebration continued with lively Bingo games and a spirited round of Trivia that had everyone scratching their heads and laughing in equal measure.
A special thank you goes to Rachele from the Lions Club, who not only brought along the iconic Lions Christmas Cakes, one of which was kindly donated as a raffle prize, but also generously lent a hand serving meals and ensuring everyone was well looked after. Events like these are only possible through the dedication of our wonderful volunteers and the unwavering support of the HCSC Staff. Your time, energy, and community spirit are the beating heart of these special gatherings.
To everyone who joined us for our Christmas in July, thank you for bringing warmth, laughter, and festive joy to our seniors. Here’s to many more moments of connection and celebration within our Hinchinbrook community.

Excitement was in the air as local kids took to the court for a free tennis session, thanks to Powerlink’s community support. Under the guidance of coach Tom, the group got straight into action, learning the basics and getting a feel for the game.
Tom took time to explain each drill, demonstrating the skills and making sure everyone knew what to do before giving it a go themselves. From holding the racquet to moving their feet, the kids were engaged, focused, and most of all, having fun.
It was a great introduction to tennis and a chance for kids to try something new in a friendly and supportive setting.

After a much-needed rest day, the wounded Gilroy squad faced Good Shepherd Mt Isa in a determined clash. Gilroy started strong, heading into halftime locked at 12-all. Mt Isa regained control early in the second half, maintaining a narrow lead until a promising line break by Shaun Devietti appeared likely to swing momentum back in Gilroy’s favour. However, a final pass to Jack Butcher was ruled forward by touch judge Jaidyn Spina, halting the comeback. Gilroy were unable to recover, eventually going down 20–12.
The final game of the carnival saw Gilroy face Chisholm Catholic College in a rematch of last year’s fixture. With only 14 players available, Gilroy were up against it from the start. Despite this, captain Shaun Devietti led by example, scoring two impressive tries. In the dying moments of the game, Nick Coco powered over the line to secure an 18–12 victory, ending the carnival on a high and doing the school’s Year 12 veterans proud.
Gilroy concluded the carnival with 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. The coaching staff expressed immense pride in the team's grit and determination, noting the players’ respectful conduct both on and off the field. Sincere thanks were also extended to the parents and supporters for their encouragement throughout the week.
In other sporting success, the Gilroy MTB Team delivered an outstanding performance at the Cycle de Vie Rockwheelers Interschool Mountain Bike Race in Townsville. The team of seven riders — Josh, Hayden, Hudson, Jessy, Rhys, Lucas and Justin — tackled their first-ever competition with impressive results, finishing 8th out of 27 schools and 213 riders.
Competing across enduro, downhill and trail events, the team demonstrated strong spirit, resilience, and teamwork throughout. Their dedication and unity stood out as they supported one another from start to finish. A big thank you goes to #KnightsMuscleTShirtPrintingIngham for providing the bold team shirts that helped the riders look as strong as they performed.
The teams now look ahead to their next challenges, fired up and ready!

The Herbert River Under-13s proudly flew the flag for their district at the Nate Myles Cup in Gordonvale over the weekend. Hosted by Southern Suburbs Rugby League Club, the two-day carnival drew teams from across North Queensland, and Herbert River impressed all with their grit, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Game 1: Statement Start
Herbert River 16 – Norths Devils Mackay Black 12
The team hit the ground running, edging out the Devils in a polished performance. Josh Gurnick-Stagnitta scored a quick-fire double, while Cooper Bligh capitalised on a classy kick from Adam Mammino. Cody Astorquia bulldozed over for a try of his own, with Josh earning Man of the Match honours.
Game 2: Rolling On
Herbert River 16 – Magpies Mackay 4
Confidence grew in Game 2 as Josh crossed twice again. Corbin Bartolini darted over from dummy half, and Adam finished a strong team effort to score. Cody, Cooper, Logan Butler, Laikyn Walsh and Hunter Gilmore all played key roles in both attack and defence, with Cooper named Man of the Match.
Game 3: Lights, Pressure and Poise
Herbert River 8 – Southern Suburbs 12
In a thrilling Saturday night clash under lights, and with Nate Myles watching, Herbert River pushed the host team all the way. Josh added two more tries, bringing his tally to six. Odin Marsh was outstanding in the middle, earning Man of the Match, while Brad Dilena, Charlie Reid and Sam Giuffrida helped guide the team through a tense, physical battle.
Game 4: A Tough Morning
Herbert River 4 – Edmonton Storm 24
The team faced a slick Edmonton outfit and, despite the scoreline, never stopped trying. Benny Blanket crashed over for a try full of grit and earned Man of the Match. Laikyn, Corbin, Noah Copley, Lawson Hennessey and Luke Anthony all stood tall in the face of adversity and showed great versatility.
Game 5: Heart to the End
Herbert River 0 – Brothers Mackay White 8
Determined to finish on a high, the boys dug deep in their final match. Josh again earned praise this time for his defence, and was named Man of the Match. Charlie stepped into dummy half with maturity, and Harry Holland impressed with sharp wing defence.
The squad can now look to the semi-finals with real confidence. Across five games, the boys showed they can match it with the best. It was a weekend filled with growth, memories, and pride for players, coaches, and families alike.
A special thank you goes to the team’s generous sponsors—keep an eye out for their branded shirts at the next Herbert River U13s game!

What a day at Artie Gofton Oval as the Crushers took on Charters Towers – and came away with the clean sweep! The Ladies 20-4 and Reserve Grade 36-10 sides put on dominant performances, securing convincing wins and setting the tone for the day.
But it was the A Grade wining the match that had us all on the edge of our seats. With the clock ticking down, Jake Nielsen hit a hole off a sharp short ball from Lachlan Erba, broke the line and found Jayden Sharp in support to score the match-winner on the hooter! Bringing the final score to 16-14 win to the Crushers.
Unreal finish to a huge afternoon of footy – well done to all three grades!

With no State Budget funding for the Dungeness rock wall or dredging this year, boaties are reminded to continue checking tide heights when crossing the bar.
As a rough guide: expect about half the tide chart reading on the sandbar.

Palm Creek was full of good vibes this week, with 28 runners out on the track, the same strong turnout as last week. We welcomed 8 fresh faces and saw 4 people set new PBs. The course was buzzing with visitors from near and far, all keeping stride with our regulars. There were a few more prams on the move and a cheerful chocolate collie trotting along, adding to the lively atmosphere.
Over in Cardwell, things were just as upbeat with 15 runners taking part. Six were first-timers, including the one who stormed across the finish line first! Two PBs were set, and everyone wrapped up the course in under an hour, making it all a fun and speedy start to the day.
A huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers — your smiles, energy, and dedication keep the whole event running smoothly. From setup to cheer squad to pack down, you make it all happen. We couldn’t do it without you!

A strong wave of interest is building in the lead-up to a special milestone weekend for the Wallaman Rugby League community. Former players, coaches, officials, and supporters are gearing up to reunite in Ingham on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th July 2025, celebrating 55 years since Wallaman first entered the Herbert River Rugby League competition, and 40 years since their under-18 team were crowned Minor Premiers and Premiers of the 1985 season.
The idea sparked during a casual pub catch-up of Ingham legacy players, and has since gained momentum, with many travelling from across Queensland and beyond to be part of this historic event.
The weekend will kick off with a Friday night “Meet & Greet” at the Station Hotel from 6pm, giving everyone the chance to share stories, laughs, and a few cold ones. On Saturday night, the gathering will move to the Ingham RSL from 5pm, with dinner available from 6pm.
A number of Wallaman legends will be in attendance, including premiership-winning coaches Bob West, Max Johnson, Rod Henniker, Barry Rolfe, and Scotchy Smith, as well as Greg Dowling, the only player to rise through Wallaman's junior ranks to reach top-level rugby league.
All former players, officials, wives, partners, and supporters are warmly invited. The organising committee expects up to 200 attendees, so if you’re planning to join, please RSVP by 30th June 2025 to help with catering numbers.
To confirm attendance, contact any of the mates here; Cliff: 0427 480 710, Scotchy: 0410 338 045, Jim: 0417 779 932, Peter: 0438 669 698.
Don’t miss this chance to relive the glory days, honour club history, and reconnect with mates – see you in Ingham in July!

Palm Creek was buzzing with energy this week, welcoming 13 first-timers, 5 PBs, and visitors from four different running clubs. In an exciting twist, a first-time participant took out the top spot at Palm Creek with a smashing debut!
Cardwell was just as lively, with 11 first-timers hitting the course, 3 PBs recorded, and friendly visitors joining in from Running Mums Australia and Caboolture Road Runners. Just like Palm Creek, a first-timer crossed the finish line first at Cardwell too. Clearly, newcomers were out to impress this week!
For the curious among you, if you look up the results and notice a little green leaf next to some names, that’s Parkrun's way of showing who’s visiting that course for the very first time. There were plenty of leafy icons this week, likely thanks to travellers in town for the Ingham Show. What better way to shake off Friday’s hot chips and fairy floss than a Saturday morning 5K?
A big thank you to all the volunteers who kept the music pumping, the Zooper Doopers icy cold, and the vibe high! You’re the heart of every run.
