Cardwell Seafest delivered an ocean of entertainment on the weekend for the whole community, with families, visitors and locals enjoying a packed program of activities, markets and performances. Young festival-goers were among those enjoying the classic Punch and Judy show, with plenty of little eyes glued to the colourful performance and its hilarious characters. The hot rod car show also proved a major drawcard, with the polished vehicles turning heads and attracting plenty of attention throughout the day. Car enthusiasts and curious spectators alike took the opportunity to admire the impressive collection and chat with fellow motoring fans. The Seafest markets were another hit, with stalls offering plenty to browse, buy and discover. And amongst them on the foreshore was the kid’s fishing competition and other fish-related activities that added to the active Sunday market atmosphere. From children gathered around the puppet booth, to fishing off the jetty, to crowds stopping to admire the hot rods and families wandering between market stalls, there was plenty happening along the Cardwell foreshore. As the weekend unfolded, Seafest offered plenty to watch, something to browse, activities to do and many familiar faces to catch up with, capturing the easygoing atmosphere that makes Cardwell events such a drawcard. By Helen Cook With October signalling the approach of The Wet, children at Jumbun have been adding a splash of colour to a project that could make a big difference when the full force of the season arrives. Jumbun is a small Aboriginal community on Girramay Country, on the Cassowary Coast, home to people from the Girramay, Jirrbal and Gulnay nations, about 40km south-west of Tully. During the school holidays, community members have been painting power poles with colourful cassowaries, flowers, birds and other images inspired by their surroundings. But behind the painting is a bigger story. Heavy rain, storms, cyclones, fallen trees and vegetation can interrupt electricity supplies across the whole of the Wet Tropics. Jumbun is particularly vulnerable because it sits at the end of a powerline running from the Tully substation. “Every single power outage on that powerline, about 40 kms of it, the Jumbun community experiences,” Ergon Energy Senior Community Engagement Advisor Kate Austin said. This wet season, however, Jumbun has something new in its corner – a low-voltage microgrid designed to keep much of the community powered when the main supply is interrupted. At its heart is a large battery “box”. “If there’s a fault on the network upstream, we can isolate the residents here in community and power it from the battery,” Kate said, allowing Tully crews to make repairs while “keeping the power on to the community”. Around 25 homes, together with the health clinic and community hall, are connected to the system, while two houses outside the microgrid configuration have been fitted with rooftop solar. Jumbun is one of two Queensland First Nations communities involved in network-connected microgrid trials, alongside Mossman Gorge, where a high-voltage system has been installed. The trials will help determine whether the technology could benefit other communities at the edge of the grid. The pole painting is part of a wider program helping residents, particularly children, understand the new technology and the importance of conserving energy. And the biggest canvas is still to come. The microgrid box will be wrapped in artwork by local Jumbun artist Tonya Grant, depicting the story of Split Rock and giving the new infrastructure a distinctly local identity. The artwork is expected to be installed within the next month. By Victoria Velton For some, a paint and sip is simply an afternoon out with a bit of bubbly. A recent Queensland Country Women Association (QCWA) event in Forrest Beach offered something a little deeper: an opportunity to talk about recovery, resilience and the importance of connection following disaster. Queensland Health Mental Health Clinician Jenna from the Disaster Recovery Team has been attending the CWA for around six months and helped organise the event as a way to bring people together. Jenna explained that the Disaster Recovery Team was formed following the region’s natural disasters, providing mental health support at a time when much of the immediate disaster assistance has already disappeared. “But that doesn’t mean people aren’t still struggling, still aren’t in their homes,” Jenna said. Jenna said community connection was a critical part of recovery, while her team also provides one-on-one support for people who may need additional help. “Stress during and immediately after a disaster is important as it helps us do what we need to do, however stress for long periods of time wreaks havoc on our body and mind and may be a sign to reach out for support,” she said. Beverley Hulme was one of those who shared her experience, recalling the floods at Forrest Beach, when she found herself isolated at home without power or communication. “I was really, really alone, and I had no resources because I wasn't prepared. Of course, I had never experienced rain coming down for 10 days,” Beverley said. Her experience changed when someone arrived at her home to conduct a welfare check, followed by women who offered to provide her with meals three times a day. “That’s what saved my mental health,” she said. For Beverley, the experience highlighted the importance of being prepared, but also the strength of a community coming together when people need it most. She also recognised that the emotional recovery does not necessarily end when the floodwaters recede. “You don’t just keep going. With that trauma inside you, you’ve got to get it out and talk about how you felt.” Another attendee shared her own experience of the disaster, explaining that while her husband was occupied helping others as part of the emergency response, she was often left alone at home. Her story highlighted a different side of disaster recovery, that even when someone has people around them, they can still feel isolated, particularly when family members are unaware of what they are experiencing. The discussion also raised concerns about residents in more isolated communities being forgotten during the floods, with attendees questioning whether emergency planning adequately considers those living further from major population centres. Jenna said the concerns raised were important and encouraged residents to continue providing feedback and directing their questions about how to get prepared before the wet season begins. “The HUB in Ingham might be able to answer those questions. Or even the councils as well, who are passionate about this. So that feedback is really important, both positive and constructive,” she said. As the community approaches another wet season, Jenna said preparedness and connection remain important parts of building resilience and supporting people through the longer-term impacts of disaster. As the conversation gave way to creativity, attendees picked up their brushes under the guidance of Tipsy-Doodle, a Townsville-based paint and sip program. The specially designed artwork showed the sun breaking through clouds over a grassy knoll, with a cut tree stump sprouting a new branch and leaves. The image was chosen to symbolise recovery and perseverance, reflecting the resilience of both nature and the community. Beginning with heavy conversation but finishing with bright artwork, the ladies of the Forrest Beach CWA’s Paint n Sip showcased canvases carrying a message that recovery takes time, and coming together is an important part of finding the strength to grow again. Sahan Kulathunge, a self-taught and gifted watercolour artist, was recently celebrated for his talents and awarded first prize for his piece titled “Ascent to Inner Peace” at the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Sahan moved to Cairns in 2022 and has been committed to shaping his skills over the past four years, experimenting with acrylics and oil before finding his passion for working with watercolour due to its unique characteristics.
“In 2023, I had the transformative opportunity to work with a talented Sri Lankan artist, Asanka Anujeewa - who is a mentor for me,” explained Sahan.
“Apart from Asanka, Cairns Urban Sketchers, and Cairns Art Society have played a significant role in my art journey.”
Sahan’s award-winning piece draws upon Buddhists’ beliefs to illustrate a path to the light through following in the footsteps and guidance set by monks to reach inner peace, and in creating this journey, Sahan incorporated lighter tones.
“Buddhists believe the pathway to inner peace is reducing buildings to the material things – lesser the buildings, calmer the mind,” shared Sahan.
An artform of precision, Sahan spent three hours creating “Ascent to Inner Peace”, and an additional ten hours studying tone, light, composition, sketching, and completing pre-works.
“Watercolour has to be done within a limited time, and the unique thing about watercolour is you have to be quick and precise when you paint as once you make a stroke that’s done – you can’t work over and over unlike other mediums.”
After receiving the People Award at the 2024 Hinchinbrook Birdlife Awards and winning second place in the 2024 Cairns Show’s watercolour section, November’s Hinchinbrook Art Awards staged the third time Sahan has been commended for his talents this year.
“The most interesting and challenging aspect about art for me is selecting the subject and context to paint as the subject is not just photo or sketch, it needs to be a tool that conveys your message, and your feelings in a way that catches the eye and attention of the viewer – that’s a real challenge,” added Sahan.
“There’s lots left to learn about watercolour as it’s the most challenging medium in fine art and by learning and developing my own unique style, I’m hoping to become a recognised watercolourist in the region, and if the conditions allow, I’m keen to do academical studies in fine art as well.”

Elliot Altmann was awarded first place in the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards Digital Art category in November for his historical piece titled "Another Christmas in the Trenches”.
A self-taught, and now award-winning artist, Elliot found his passion for the digitalised artform more recently than most and creates his pieces on a drawing tablet to then connect the finished product to his computer for finalisation.
“It’s essentially the same as drawing on paper, just a lot easier to fix mistakes, and change colours,” explained Elliot.
“I find it relaxing having to focus on the details of what I’m drawing, and I mostly draw mashups of old cartoons that while fun, aren’t as challenging as creating a realistic image.”
“The beauty of digital drawing is its easier to conceptualise and make changes as you go.”
In drawing upon his interest in military history, Elliot’s piece, "Another Christmas in the Trenches” depicts a German soldier in World War II on the Eastern Front.
With great attention to detail, it took Elliot approximately eight hours to precisely depict the emotion and existence of a frontline infantry soldier suffering the wartime conditions as experienced across both sides of the conflict.
“I served 12 years in the ADF as an infantry soldier, so I had plenty of first-hand experience with being dirty and uncomfortable, and that’s something often missing in military artwork that usually focuses on the glory of a particular event rather than the human experience,” added Elliot.
Elliot celebrated his successful submission by treating himself to a couple of vinyl records, with his achievement sparking another world of creativity, leading him to begin developing more pieces ahead of 2025’s exhibition with plenty already featured on his Instagram account, @artbyalts.
“I’d recommend people interested to have a go and enter as when you see the variety of ideas, skill level and mediums you can enter in, it really opens up the possibilities for anyone,” shared Elliot.
“It’s definitely humbling having your art chosen by judges who are also talented artists themselves.”

A unique performance, 4String Phil creates a wave of original tunes covering genres including blues, rock, hillbilly and techno, adding he’s always excited to play his music at new venues and share his talents with audiences in an interactive way.
“A music magazine once tried to describe my music as George Thorogood, ZZ Top, Ry Cooder on steroids with a touch of hillbilly and techno,” Phil said.
“I do this fulltime and have been travelling and living out of a van all over Australia for twelve years, playing at venues, corporate events, and big festivals, and on this trip, I have Getting Didgee with me - a friend of mine from Airlie Beach!”
With spoons, tambourines and equipment at the ready, Phil plans on inviting audience members to join the show on stage to produce an AC/DC didgeridoo hillbilly fusion like no other.

The Hinchinbrook Shire Library warmly invites parents and caregivers to join Playtime, a vibrant, enriching and educational session designed especially for children aged 0 to 5 years old. Held each and every first, second and fourth Thursday of the month at 10:30am at the TYTO Conference and Events Centre, this thirty-minute program combines stories, songs, and rhymes for a morning filled with fun and learning.
Playtime is more than just entertainment – it provides parents and carers with the perfect opportunity to foster language and literacy development among young children during their critical early years. As part of the First 5 Forever initiative, a State Government and State Library of Queensland program, these sessions empower parents and caregivers with the tools and support needed to help their little ones build essential communication and literacy skills.
Each session offers interactive activities to engage children while strengthening the bond between parent and child. From singing familiar rhymes to exploring captivating stories, Playtime creates an environment where learning feels like play.
Parents and caregivers will also have access to valuable resources and advice with a Queensland Health Clinical Nurse readily available at the conclusion of each session to answer questions, address concerns, and provide guidance on children’s health and development. Baby scales and educational materials are also provided to ensure every family feels supported.
Whether you’re a first-time parent or a seasoned caregiver, Playtime offers a welcoming space for families to connect, learn, grow together, and spend time with the littlest members of the family.
Mark your calendars and pop down to the Hinchinbrook Shire Library for a joyful morning of stories, songs, and play. All details and additional information can be found on the Hinchinbrook Shire Library’s website.

One of the world’s most beloved performers, Arj Barker, will have you questioning the fundamental components of life itself with his upcoming performance at the JL Kelly Theatre on Friday 9 May next year!
An ARIA Award Winning American comedian and actor, Arj’s performance intends to answer some of life’s biggest questions which will have audiences laughing and learning well into the night. The Mind Field has garnered much attention and five-star reviews from various publications and critics, with Broadway Baby calling Arj’s performance, “excellent stand-up by an exceptional comedian.”
Arj has been deemed Australia’s funniest adopted Californian, and having spent over a decade living in Melbourne, he has come to understand the complexities of Australian culture, an understanding he comedically intertwines into his performances.
Over his time living in Australia, Arj has become a household name, appearing on television shows including the original, Hey Hey It’s Saturday program, and performing in venues across the country. 2024 has presented itself as a big year for the talented comedian, from launching his brand new live stand-up show, The Mind Field, to landing his first lead role in a feature film, The Nut Farm.
After selling out shows across 2023, Arj landed himself a spot on the star studded 2024 Brisbane Comedy Festival lineup earlier this year where he performed Power Hour – a compilation of his most beloved jokes over the past thirty years.
Arj will ignite the JL Kelly Theatre into uncontrollable laughter on Friday 9 May, 2025, with audiences advised to strap in to enjoy many humorous perspectives on many of life’s most questionable phenomenon’s like, “why do farts smell?”. A 15+ performance, The Mind Field will explore many profound concepts with a comedic tone and tickets to the once in a lifetime performance will be available from 10am on Thursday 28 November on the JL Kelly Theatre website.
You’ll laugh, and you’ll learn, but you’ll never look at anything the same once you enter… The Mind Field.

The Hinchinbrook Shire Library are gearing up for another enriching school holidays filled with enjoyment and education following the launch of their annual Summer Reading Program on Monday 9 December.
Students aged between six to twelve years are encouraged to sign up for the free program to discover the enchanting world of the written word, with an awesome, Fitbit Inspire Tracker awarded to the student with the highest reading logbook! With each student’s entry, they’re also placed into a fantastic raffle set to be drawn at the program’s conclusion for one lucky reader’s opportunity to win a Yeti 769ml Straw Bottle.
“The program is a great way to encourage children to read over the holidays, and have fun while doing it,” explained Kelannei of the Hinchinbrook Shire Library.
It should come as no surprise that fostering a love of reading at a young age produces a world of benefits in the areas relating to language growth, imagination, creativity, and academic advancement. What better time to introduce or build upon such a wonderful habit than during these summer school holidays?
Over the course of the school holidays, students are to record and track each book read in their logbook available at www.library.hinchinbrook.qld.gov, allowing the program to stand as a positive, and measurable tool regarding your child’s literacy engagement.
On Friday 24 January, the program’s participants are invited to attend a celebratory Summer Reading Party where each of the winners will be announced, and each student will be presented with an Encouragement Award for their commitment and dedication.
For more information on how your child can be part of such a fantastic and enriching program, visit www.library.hinchinbrook.qld.gov or email library@hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au.
