Cardwell Seafest delivered an ocean of entertainment on the weekend for the whole community, with families, visitors and locals enjoying a packed program of activities, markets and performances. Young festival-goers were among those enjoying the classic Punch and Judy show, with plenty of little eyes glued to the colourful performance and its hilarious characters. The hot rod car show also proved a major drawcard, with the polished vehicles turning heads and attracting plenty of attention throughout the day. Car enthusiasts and curious spectators alike took the opportunity to admire the impressive collection and chat with fellow motoring fans. The Seafest markets were another hit, with stalls offering plenty to browse, buy and discover. And amongst them on the foreshore was the kid’s fishing competition and other fish-related activities that added to the active Sunday market atmosphere. From children gathered around the puppet booth, to fishing off the jetty, to crowds stopping to admire the hot rods and families wandering between market stalls, there was plenty happening along the Cardwell foreshore. As the weekend unfolded, Seafest offered plenty to watch, something to browse, activities to do and many familiar faces to catch up with, capturing the easygoing atmosphere that makes Cardwell events such a drawcard. By Helen Cook With October signalling the approach of The Wet, children at Jumbun have been adding a splash of colour to a project that could make a big difference when the full force of the season arrives. Jumbun is a small Aboriginal community on Girramay Country, on the Cassowary Coast, home to people from the Girramay, Jirrbal and Gulnay nations, about 40km south-west of Tully. During the school holidays, community members have been painting power poles with colourful cassowaries, flowers, birds and other images inspired by their surroundings. But behind the painting is a bigger story. Heavy rain, storms, cyclones, fallen trees and vegetation can interrupt electricity supplies across the whole of the Wet Tropics. Jumbun is particularly vulnerable because it sits at the end of a powerline running from the Tully substation. “Every single power outage on that powerline, about 40 kms of it, the Jumbun community experiences,” Ergon Energy Senior Community Engagement Advisor Kate Austin said. This wet season, however, Jumbun has something new in its corner – a low-voltage microgrid designed to keep much of the community powered when the main supply is interrupted. At its heart is a large battery “box”. “If there’s a fault on the network upstream, we can isolate the residents here in community and power it from the battery,” Kate said, allowing Tully crews to make repairs while “keeping the power on to the community”. Around 25 homes, together with the health clinic and community hall, are connected to the system, while two houses outside the microgrid configuration have been fitted with rooftop solar. Jumbun is one of two Queensland First Nations communities involved in network-connected microgrid trials, alongside Mossman Gorge, where a high-voltage system has been installed. The trials will help determine whether the technology could benefit other communities at the edge of the grid. The pole painting is part of a wider program helping residents, particularly children, understand the new technology and the importance of conserving energy. And the biggest canvas is still to come. The microgrid box will be wrapped in artwork by local Jumbun artist Tonya Grant, depicting the story of Split Rock and giving the new infrastructure a distinctly local identity. The artwork is expected to be installed within the next month. By Victoria Velton For some, a paint and sip is simply an afternoon out with a bit of bubbly. A recent Queensland Country Women Association (QCWA) event in Forrest Beach offered something a little deeper: an opportunity to talk about recovery, resilience and the importance of connection following disaster. Queensland Health Mental Health Clinician Jenna from the Disaster Recovery Team has been attending the CWA for around six months and helped organise the event as a way to bring people together. Jenna explained that the Disaster Recovery Team was formed following the region’s natural disasters, providing mental health support at a time when much of the immediate disaster assistance has already disappeared. “But that doesn’t mean people aren’t still struggling, still aren’t in their homes,” Jenna said. Jenna said community connection was a critical part of recovery, while her team also provides one-on-one support for people who may need additional help. “Stress during and immediately after a disaster is important as it helps us do what we need to do, however stress for long periods of time wreaks havoc on our body and mind and may be a sign to reach out for support,” she said. Beverley Hulme was one of those who shared her experience, recalling the floods at Forrest Beach, when she found herself isolated at home without power or communication. “I was really, really alone, and I had no resources because I wasn't prepared. Of course, I had never experienced rain coming down for 10 days,” Beverley said. Her experience changed when someone arrived at her home to conduct a welfare check, followed by women who offered to provide her with meals three times a day. “That’s what saved my mental health,” she said. For Beverley, the experience highlighted the importance of being prepared, but also the strength of a community coming together when people need it most. She also recognised that the emotional recovery does not necessarily end when the floodwaters recede. “You don’t just keep going. With that trauma inside you, you’ve got to get it out and talk about how you felt.” Another attendee shared her own experience of the disaster, explaining that while her husband was occupied helping others as part of the emergency response, she was often left alone at home. Her story highlighted a different side of disaster recovery, that even when someone has people around them, they can still feel isolated, particularly when family members are unaware of what they are experiencing. The discussion also raised concerns about residents in more isolated communities being forgotten during the floods, with attendees questioning whether emergency planning adequately considers those living further from major population centres. Jenna said the concerns raised were important and encouraged residents to continue providing feedback and directing their questions about how to get prepared before the wet season begins. “The HUB in Ingham might be able to answer those questions. Or even the councils as well, who are passionate about this. So that feedback is really important, both positive and constructive,” she said. As the community approaches another wet season, Jenna said preparedness and connection remain important parts of building resilience and supporting people through the longer-term impacts of disaster. As the conversation gave way to creativity, attendees picked up their brushes under the guidance of Tipsy-Doodle, a Townsville-based paint and sip program. The specially designed artwork showed the sun breaking through clouds over a grassy knoll, with a cut tree stump sprouting a new branch and leaves. The image was chosen to symbolise recovery and perseverance, reflecting the resilience of both nature and the community. Beginning with heavy conversation but finishing with bright artwork, the ladies of the Forrest Beach CWA’s Paint n Sip showcased canvases carrying a message that recovery takes time, and coming together is an important part of finding the strength to grow again. Swedish immigrant and small farmer’s wife Gussie Feldt recounted the day in 1892 that a well-known vagrant woman, Annie Bags, passing through Halifax knocked on August Anderssen’s door. On that fateful day Eva, August’s wife, had just set up a dainty afternoon tea in the parlour for Flora Shaw, renowned British journalist, author, and staunch imperialist who was in the district to see for herself the state of the sugar industry as it prepared to transition from indentured Melanesian labour to free white labour. Her findings were published in The Times in 1893.
Before Flora arrived, there was a knock on the door. It was Annie Bags. Eva, all a fluster at Annie arriving at such an unsuitable time, told her to “Come back tomorrow, I am expecting a great person here and she might come at any moment.”
When Flora arrived, she was welcomed into the Anderssen’s parlour. However, just as August began his prepared speech detailing the grievances of small farmers in the tropical north far away from the seat of Government in Brisbane Flora started shifting uneasily. He tried to get her attention again, but then she jumped up and flew out the door. August was incensed, taking her hasty departure as a personal affront.
However, as it turned out she was covered in ground fleas that she had picked up from her visit around the farm to see the living and working conditions of the indentured labourers. After she had bathed and got into clean clothes, August saw the funny side of the situation, but he and Eva were disappointed Flora never got to hear his speech.
When Annie turned up the next day hoping for half a crown for fortune telling or for her tins and bottles to be filled with milk for her cats, August told her to “Get away!” Annie replied, “Ah well, of course I am not Flora Shaw” and at that August burst into laughter.
Who was Annie Bags? As the story goes her actual surname was Ferdinand and that she was a well-educated Prussian aristocrat (she claimed to be a Hungarian countess) who travelled to Australia in the late 1880s in pursuit of a red-headed Englishman she had met in Europe whom she believed intended to marry her.
Understanding that he may have ventured to the goldfields she searched the fields from Victoria to Queensland, finally locating him in Ravenswood and married to another woman. Broken-hearted and who knows what her financial situation was, she became a vagrant. Travelling on foot, dressed in clothes made of calico grain bags and carrying her belongings in sugar bags, and accompanied by a menagerie of animals, she traversed north Queensland.
On 17 April 2019, 109 years after Annie Bags’ death and burial in Townsville’s Belgian Gardens Cemetery at the age of 59, a headstone was finally erected on her unmarked grave. This came about through the crowd funding efforts of Rod Jones of Raven Tours.
Currently at the TYTO Regional Gallery, there’s a thought-provoking exhibition on the concept of androgyny. Masculine, feminine, duality, fluidity, balance, obscurity and nature all flow freely.
Exploring the androgynous forms in the natural and human world through the eyes of a diverse group of artists, this culmination of work by artists David Rowe, Jade Grioli, Ann Vardanega, Helen Thrift-Brooks & Mitch Lynn is eye-catching.
Many of the works are purposefully hung directly at eye level, so you have to match the figures’ gazes and get drawn into the capturing landscapes. The wide-open layout of the exhibition gives viewers the space to drift and flow between works, taking in whatever it is that catches the eye.

After a brief postponement, the highly anticipated Next Gen Cane Forum is officially back on, with growers and industry professionals set to gather across 14 and 15 April for two days of learning, networking, and hands-on experience.
Kicking off with a pre-forum welcome on Monday evening, delegates will have the opportunity to connect over drinks and hear from guest speaker Adam Douglas of Jet Zero, exploring the future of sustainable aviation fuel and its relevance to the industry.
Tuesday’s program, set about how to do it yourself, together, with a resources and management focus on practical, on-the-ground solutions for cane growers. The day begins with a CASE IH breakfast and presentation on the latest tractor technologies before moving into the Herbert Walk and Talk sessions. These rotating presentations will cover everything from new cane varieties and weed management to cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence, drone technology, and chemical safety.
The afternoon continues with industry-led discussions centred on improving productivity and sustainability, including soil amendments, multispecies cover crops, and do-it-yourself ratoon stunting disease testing. A networking lunch with Wilmar Sugar and Renewables will also highlight the importance of collaboration in driving the industry forward.
On Wednesday, the focus shifts to finance and farm visits, looking at production and potentials, offering delegates a deeper look into the business side of agriculture. Breakfast and lunch sessions will provide insights into finance options, with industry representatives available to answer questions and share advice.
Field visits will showcase innovation in action, including large-scale farm diversification, autonomous tractor technology, and advances in biological inputs. The day will also feature an irrigation system demonstration, highlighting new approachesto improving efficiency on-farm.
The forum will wrap up with a visit to the Burdekin Rum Distillery, followed by a dinner at the Queens Hotel and a panel discussion featuring leading voices from across the sugar industry.
With a strong mix of practical knowledge, innovation, and collaboration, the return of the Next Gen Cane Forum promises to deliver valuable insights and opportunities for the region’s current and next generation of growers.
A striking depiction of one of Australia’s most iconic birds earned Cairns-based artist Kevin Young the top honour in the Open category at the 2025 Hinchinbrook Birdlife Art Awards.
His winning piece, Brolga, captured judges’ attention with its intricate detail and lifelike realism, reflecting a deep connection to the natural world.
“Nature is my main source of inspiration,” he said.
“I am particularly drawn to Australian wildlife and landscapes, and I enjoy capturing the character and detail of animals through careful observation.”
Born in South Africa, Mr Young moved to Australia in 1971 and his journey to recognition has been anything but conventional. Before dedicating more time to his art, he worked as a sail maker, balancing creativity with the demands of everyday life.
“In more recent years, after experiencing some health challenges, I made the decision to slow down and refocus on the things that truly matter to me,” he enthused.
“Creativity has always remained important to me and art stayed with me as a personal passion. Returning to drawing and painting became an important part of that process. Art has allowed me to reconnect with creativity, patience and the natural world.”
A self-taught realism artist, Mr Young works primarily with graphite, often combined with watercolour, to capture the fine detail and character of Australian wildlife.
“One of the things I value most about creating art is the opportunity to share moments from the natural environment with others,” he explained.
“Whether it is a bird, reptile or landscape, I enjoy the challenge of translating what I see into a piece that invites the viewer to pause and appreciate the subject.”
His work has been exhibited in galleries across the country and internationally, but he says the most rewarding aspect of art is sharing the beauty of the natural environment with others.
“Creating art has become both a passion and a deeply rewarding pursuit,” he said.
“I want my audience to see nature as I do, then be inspired to protect her as they would their own child.”
With Brolga now an award-winning piece, Mr Young continues to build a reputation for work that not only showcases artistic skill but also encourages appreciation and protection of the natural world.

Over the weekend of March 20 and 21, the thespians from the Ingham Theatre Group (ITG), came together to perform a series of one act plays, skits and other items, over three performances, for appreciative audiences at the Forrest Beach Progress Associations, community hall.
As a result of the Kelly Theatre being unavailable following severe damage from last year’s flood event, the Groups yearly One Act Play performance, had to be shifted to a new venue. The hall at Forrest Beach provided the ideal place for community theatre, and the staging of the yearly performance. We could not have chosen a better place!
Preparations for the event, entitled, In Good Audience, proudly produced by Steven Veltmeyer, started early this year with the group selecting and casting an eclectic range of short items featuring comedy, drama, improvisation and youth theatre. A hectic schedule of line learning and rehearsals ensued. It culminated after two months in a weekend of performance which not only involved the players but also supporting members of other community groups.
Three performances were scheduled for the weekend, regardless of the inclement weather caused by Cyclone Narelle. Friday night, Saturday night and for the first time, a Saturday afternoon matinee, for patrons who prefer not to travel at night. All of the shows were well attended with over to 200 patrons overall for the weekend.
The program, enjoyed by the audiences, was varied and included comedic skits, short dramatic one act plays, theatre sports and a vocal item. The items showcased the talents of club members from seventy-year-olds to primary school children.
A highlight of the matinee was the first performance of our Junior Theatre group, mostly young Primary School aged children, to the community at large. Their performance of The Magic Lamp, wonderfully directed by their club teacher Kimberley Veltmeyer, was well received by the audience. We are very proud of this group, which only commenced in 2025, as it allows our club to introduce to and involve younger members of our community in the dramatic arts.
Audiences at all three performances, which lasted for approximately ninety minutes, expressed a high level of enjoyment in the program and especially to the chance of experiencing drama at the Forrest Beach venue. For us the weekend was a complete success!
We would like to thank the members of the Forrest Beach Progress Association and the Forrest Beach Surf Life Saving Association who provided support for the performances and to the Hinchinbrook Shire Council who provided a Community Grant of $600 to go towards the costs of running the event. Thanks also to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School and to Hinchinbrook Rotary Club who generously helped with provision of equipment for the event.

COMMUNITY THEATRE IS ALIVE AND WELL IN INGHAM!
Cassowary Coast Library & Museum Services, in partnership with Mamu Health Service, is inviting families and community members to a special evening event at the Innisfail Library on Friday, 27 March, from 5pm to 7pm.
‘Night at the Library’ will transform the library into a lively hub of activities after hours, with shared storytelling, multicultural craft activities, a family photo booth, and a community meal provided by Mamu Health Service. The event aims to give families who may not usually attend library programs, or who cannot visit during regular hours, a chance to connect, celebrate, and enjoy a sense of belonging.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Teresa Millwood highlighted the importance of the event.
“A Night at the Library is a wonderful opportunity for families and community members to come together, share stories, and celebrate the vibrant cultures that make our region so special,” Mayor Millwood said.
“Libraries are more than just places for books, they are hubs for connection, learning, and community, and this event is a perfect example of that.”
Cassowary Coast Regional Council are thrilled to partner with Mamu Health Service to bring the event to life, with Councillor Trudy Tschui adding how much Council are looking forward to seeing the community come together.
“This evening is about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and included,” she said.
“It’s a chance to experience the magic of storytelling, explore different cultures, and enjoy quality time with family and friends.”

Award winning singer Damien Leith is set to bring a very special show to Ingham, showcasing the wonderful music of Roy Orbison. This show however, is far more than just a tribute, encompassing the music of Orbison’s circle such as the Travelling Wilburys as well as special new tracks co-written with Joe Melson – Roy Orbison’s long-time collaborator.
The show is a long time in the making and was formed through incredible circumstances, as an Australian Idol performance of Orbison’s song ‘Crying’, attracted the attention of his widow all the way in Nashville. This led to a series of life-changing events in which Damien was ingratiated into Orbison’s inner circle.
“She called me and said she liked my version. She liked how I made it my own. Three years later she asked me to fly over to Nashville to record an album of his songs in my style to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday”, said Damien.
“It was a huge honour. I got to work with a whole bunch of people associated with Roy Orbison.”
As he got acquainted with Orbison’s circle, Damien met Joe Melson, co-writer of some of Orbison’s biggest hits. The two begun a fruitful collaboration, writing songs that are set to appear on the new tour.
“We’ve written a bunch of songs. When people hear it, they get a sense of that era of music, but it also has a new spin”.
The performance is a special solo acoustic showcase. One voice, one guitar, and one incredible repertoire.
“The stripped back nature of the show grants a lot of freedom in the performance. It’s weird – I’ve done shows with a full orchestra but at the same time I found I’m enjoying myself more in these really intimate settings”.
New to the region, Damien is incredibly excited to perform in Ingham for the first time.
“I’ve grown up in regional areas. The reception to music is always really good. Really wholesome.”
Speaking to Damien, we reflected on the amazing legacy of Roy Orbison, as his music continues to receive praise six decades after it was released.
“People still buy CDs. They still come to shows. There are loads of people playing his stuff in different formats. He has a unique voice, and his songwriting was so different.”

The calendar has ticked over to March and rehearsals are well underway for the Ingham Theatre Group’s first offering of 2026. “In Good Audience” is the moniker for a collection of short plays and sketches sure to tickle the collective funny bone.
Familiar faces will be joined by some enthusiastic newcomers to present a variety of content with the unifying theme of good fun. For the first time, the production heads out to Forrest Beach and the spacious Progress Hall with evening performances on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th commencing at 7pm and a first-ever matinee on the Saturday at 2pm.
Doors will open an hour before commencement, and refreshments will be available.
Tickets are available online at hinchinbrooktickets.com.au and at the door. Adult entrance is $20 and the student, senior and concession price a mere $10. And, as one character remarks in the first play – the best part of going to the theatre is that there are no ads! Except, perhaps, a reminder that the ever-popular theatre restaurant season will return in August so there is more fun to look forward to.
