Hinchinbrook was buzzing on Friday as award winning Australian artist Tones and I lit up the Ingham Showgrounds, drawing a crowd of about 5,000 people for a night that blended big stage energy with unmistakable country hospitality.
A little rain couldn’t wash away the excitement as Ingham showed up loud, proud and united, proving once again that this community never shies away from a great night out.
The performance came after Tones and I challenged regional towns across Australia to show why she should bring a special one-off show to their community.
HINCHINBROOK STRIKES THE RIGHT TONES AS 5,000 FANS TURN OUT IN FORCE
Hinchinbrook rallied with passion and creativity as shopfronts were transformed, murals appeared across the district, social media lit up with messages of support, and locals shared stories of what makes their region unique. Love shared from world class fishing and thriving birdlife to its proud sugar industry heritage.
That groundswell of community spirit ultimately secured Ingham as the chosen destination.
Ahead of the show, Hinchinbrook Shire Mayor Cr Ramon Jayo — a proud Macknade cane farmer with more than 30 years of experience in local government — officially welcomed Tones and I to the region.
In a gesture reflecting Hinchinbrook’s deep agricultural roots, he presented her with a cane knife, symbolic of farming families who have shaped the district.
Mayor Jayo said the event was a significant moment for Hinchinbrook.
“When an artist like Tones and I comes to Ingham, it’s a big deal for a town like ours,” Mayor Jayo said.
“We’re a hardworking community built on agriculture and small business, and nights like this give people a chance to come together and enjoy something special close to home.
“Seeing families out, kids having fun and local businesses busy — that’s what it’s all about.”
The impact was felt well beyond the stage. Local eateries, cafés and accommodation providers reported strong trade with some experiencing their busiest night in years.
It’s estimated that one Friday night will add an estimated $221,000 to the local Hinchinbrook economy, through increased spend on hospitality, retail, accommodation and event suppliers.
Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism President Mary Brown said the event demonstrated the shire’s capability and potential.
“To host an event of this scale with such a short turnaround — and still achieve the attendance we did — has clearly shown performers what Hinchinbrook is capable of,” Ms Brown said.
“It proves that our shire has the capacity and potential to host and accommodate events of this size well into the future.”
She said the experience had been uplifting for local businesses and the broader community.
“The excitement and enthusiasm we’ve witnessed throughout this process has been an incredible morale booster,” she said.
“This time of year is traditionally commercially slow, the mood can be sombre and negative sentiment often rises. This event has given our community something positive to rally around, and that has been just as valuable as the concert itself.”
Mayor Jayo also extended his gratitude to the wider community and acknowledged the community effort that helped secure the concert.
“When the challenge was put forward, our community didn’t hesitate and a big thank you to Justine Stoddart for kicking it off,” he said.
“Businesses, families, community groups and volunteers all stepped up. That collective effort is what brought Tones and I to Ingham, and it’s something we should be incredibly proud of.”
On behalf of the community, Council extends its thanks to Tones and I, her team, event partners, local businesses, schools, community organisations and every community member who helped bring the night to life.

The Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms burst into life this week as students at St Peter’s Catholic School celebrated the start of the school year with a vibrant display of personalised artwork. Each creation told a unique story: handprints and footprints marked their arrival, cupcakes represented their age, and carefully placed matchsticks showed the number of people in their family. Pieces of string illustrated how tall they’ve grown, while brightly coloured flowers highlighted each child's favourite colour. Completing the display, students proudly shared what they are good at. Together, the artworks form a joyful snapshot of a confident and creative learning community and the promise of things to come at St Peter’s.

It’s by royal decree so you must! I’m a gentle, affectionate girl who may be a little shy at first, but with patience and kindness, my loving nature truly shines. Once I feel safe and settled, you’ll start to see my playful, curious side... and maybe even a hint of adventure.
I’d love a calm, cozy home where I can feel secure, with a quiet spot to relax whenever I need it. I’m happiest as an indoor girl and would be open to sharing my world with other cats.
Older children suit me best, and I can happily get to know younger ones too, as long as they’re kind and understanding while I settle in. If you’re looking for a sweet soul who will blossom into a devoted companion, I’d love to meet you—and maybe steal your heart this belated Valentine’s

On Friday 13th February, Mission Arts iconic ‘Threads’ exhibition opened at Ingham’s TYTO Regional Art Gallery. Produced with the assistance of the Mission Beach Community Arts Association, the threads exhibition has been running in Mission Beach for 10 years.
“I was talking to a previous director, and she asked if I thought of any exhibitions that would be good to travel with to other galleries. I suggested threads”, said Threads Coordinator Sally Moroney.
“I said that if we came down to Hinchinbrook, it would be great to involve local artists from Ingham, so it has the local connection."
The exhibition boasts an extraordinary amount of versatility in its curation.
“The great thing about the exhibition is that even though it’s broadly connected by the theme of fibre and textile, there’s such a variety of techniques that the different artists use,” added Sally.
“There’s basketry, embroidery, hand embroidery, machine embroidery and weaving.”
The exhibition also features experimental and inventive uses of materials for stunning art displays.
“There’s even creations where little abstracts are made out of coconut fibre.”
The gallery features work from the Ghost Net Collective, a special award-winning art group.
“They do amazing artwork from the fishing nets and rope found along the beaches. They work with all the beach debris, fishing nets and rope from around the cape. They help with collecting and making amazing work out of it,” she explained.
“The work they’ve got in there at the moment has won a major prize at the World of Wearable Art in New Zealand, from Wellington. It’s world famous.”
Sally expressed immense gratitude towards the council for their support.
“The council provide this great gallery space. You don’t get that kind of support in a lot of communities. To be able to spread out and fill up this beautiful gallery space is wonderful. The help from gallery stuff is fantastic as well.”
The goal of the Threads exhibition is to highlight work that may otherwise go unrecognised.
“With fibre and textile arts, they’re inclined to be underappreciated. People think it’s just someone stitching at home. They don’t always regard that it’s a really serious art form that can be manifested in so many different ways,” she said.
“Whether it’s pelting basketry, textile work, printing, dyeing or an array of techniques, it can become world class art. When you see beautiful gallery standard fibre and textile art, you really appreciate it. The work just as valuable as canvas paintings or carved statues.”
The Threads exhibition offers a great experience for those with a keen interest in art. It is wonderful to see brilliant works introduced to the Hinchinbrook region.
The exhibition will be on display until the Saturday 14th March, so don’t hesitate to see it before it leaves.

Tucked away in a small suburban street in Cardwell, there lies a room full of puzzles, paintings and a vast array of creative projects in the process. African animals, Australian wildlife, flowers, patterns, people, shapes and colours. These all fill the workshop as Keith Haack and Maxine Edwards continue to produce creative works, refusing to let age slow them down.
At 90 years of age, Keith is more energised than ever, as he continues to work on complex puzzles and produce interesting works of art. A tough battle with diabetes meant Keith had to move into an aged care facility.
“I went there. I just left everything behind. I was so crook,” said Keith.
But the challenge would prove to be a great opportunity, as Keith used the circumstances to pursue arts and craft.
“I started going around every morning and saying hello to old people. Then I got on to more things. I met this lady, she was a volunteer at the home.”
That lady is Maxine Edwards, who at 71 lives with Keith, as they spend their days sorting through complex puzzles and creating new artworks. After a stint at the home, Keith moved into Maxine’s flat, now the main production studio.
Maxine and Keith are both half blind, with Maxine unfortunately losing her eye to cancer. Despite this, the pair continue to work on their projects, keeping their minds active and focused. Although the collection is growing, they continue to eagerly search for whatever they can get their hands on.
“We get [puzzles] wherever we go”.
Keith is immensely proud of his current projects, which includes a staggering 6000-piece puzzle - their most ambitious challenge yet. The dark pieces and huge set pose a task that may take months but is it exciting to see what will happen once it’s completed.
With a background in building and engineering, Keith has always kept his mind and body active with craft work, however this current endeavour has allowed his creativity to flourish with no signs of slowing down.
Above all, Keith’s greatest hope is that he can get fellow elderly locals to participate.
“It’s important to get people to use their brains”.
Creative tasks such as puzzles, paintings and illustrations can be an incredibly productive way to stay active and keep the mind moving. Keith spoke of the importance and has made a strong call for the community to get involved. He wants more elderly people to join in so that they can keep their mind sharp and focused.
As it the studio continues to grow, it is exciting to see the work being done. If you, or someone you know, may be interested, don’t hesitate to get in contact with Keith himself at: 0429 665 645.

The Bissons Electrical People’s Choice Award at the 47th Hinchinbrook Art Awards has been awarded to The Catch, a painting by 17-year-old artist Hamish Darveniza. The work depicts a jaguar and a caiman engaged in a dramatic struggle, and attracted strong attention from visitors throughout the exhibition.
The painting was noted for its detailed realism and dynamic composition, which resonated with audiences and ultimately secured the popular vote.
Community and Cultural Services Portfolio Councillor Donna Marbelli said community engagement with this year’s exhibition had been particularly strong. She described the winning artwork as bold and full of energy, noting that the People’s Choice Award reflects a genuine public response to work that connects with viewers.
At just 17, Hamish is already building a successful career as an artist with recognition for a number of art works already under his belt.
The Hinchinbrook Art Awards continue to highlight creative talent from across the region and attract significant community interest each year. The event serves as one of North Queensland’s most anticipated cultural events and is hosted at the TYTO Regional Art Gallery in Ingham.
The awards have seen great success over the years, growing steadily in both scale and reputation and cementing their place as a cornerstone of the region’s cultural calendar. Each year, the Hinchinbrook Art Awards attract an increasing number of entries and visitors, reflecting a strong and ongoing appetite for the arts within the community. The exhibition not only provides a professional platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their work, but also encourages dialogue, education, and appreciation of visual art among local audiences.
Supporting the arts in the region is vital to nurturing creative talent, strengthening cultural identity, and enriching community life. Events such as the Hinchinbrook Art Awards help ensure that artists, particularly young and emerging creatives, have opportunities to be seen, valued, and celebrated close to home. They also deliver broader social and economic benefits, drawing visitors to the area and contributing to the vibrancy of local cultural spaces. Continued investment in regional arts affirms their importance as a means of expression, connection, and pride for the community as a whole.

Known for the radio hits of Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, and eclectic songwriting of solo project Diesel, legendary Australian singer-songwriter Mark Lizotte will be coming to Ingham for a very special type of show. The BY REQUEST TOUR, will see audiences actively participating in the music, allowing fans to choose the songs they want to hear from Diesel’s immensely varied and impressive career. It will cross through Ingham Saturday 21st February via the Hinchinbrook Shire Hall.
Whether it be rock radio staples from 1989’s smash hit Johny Diesel & The Injectors, or fresh tracks from the most recent LP Bootleg Melancholy, audiences are in for a great night of spontaneity and improvisation.
This style of show originally begun in 2005, following Mark’s turn to solo performance. Over 20 years later, the by request style of show returns with updated features including the options of covers ranging from jazz standards to Rhianna. Despite such a varied career, Mark has been able to bring songs together for an eclectic ever-evolving set.
“I’ve kind of mingled them together. It’s like a family where you just keep adopting children and you introduce the new kids to the older ones,” he said.
“The songs play off each other. It’s always intriguing to hear how a new song is going to sit next to an older one.”
The current series of solo performances has it’s roots in New York in the early 2000’s, where Mark went to reinvent himself as a solo performer after splitting from the Injectors.
“I started doing solo shows there, because I saw people doing these shows by themselves and it looked like a lot of fun, although quite challenging as well,” Mark added.
“There’s definitely no place to hide. However, there is a really special connection with the audience – they can hear every little squeak and nuance. Vulnerability is a strength.”
As I spoke to Mark over the phone, I could tell that his talent and success were clearly defined by an immense passion for music. Though incredibly successful in his own right, he demonstrated humility, expressing his adoration for the artists that had inspired him.
“It was pretty amazing to support Bruce Springsteen. Seeing my amplifier next to his was surreal.”
Mark also expressed a great connection with Australian songwriters, such as Colin Hay of Men at Work.
“I remember seeing him at Queenscliff Music Festival in Victoria. I had played in the afternoon and he came on after. He just blew my mind. He was really comfortable and was able to convey so much with just an acoustic guitar and one pedal,” he said.
“The irony is that a lot of his songs are about anxiety and depression. They’re like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s really easy to think it’s a happy little pop song, but his themes run much deeper.”
It’s clear Mark’s musical journey has been nurtured by the people he’s played with.
“I saw a solo show of Neil Finn in New York where he actually invited me up. I discovered how solo performance could be about the power of suggestion,” he said.
“When I strip things back, I can still hear all the parts because of the power of what’s implied. I do little subtle things with my hands and voice to imply certain parts, but the brain fills in the rest. It’s an amazing thing, imagination.”
As a seasoned performer, Mark is “no stranger to the Bruce Highway”.
“Every stop along far north Queensland has a real looseness about it. The audiences are always real music lovers”.
The environment and beautiful landscape continue to play an active role in shaping the expression of the music.
“I think music is totally influenced by environment. Take Thelma Plum for instance, her music still has an Australian sound to it. It doesn’t just sound like 20 UK acts. I think it’s an Australian tradition to mix things people might not otherwise think of,” Mark recalled.
“When Beds are Burning hit the radio across the world, it was like no one had ever heard anything like it. It was jagged and angular, but it sounded like the Aussie bush fused with protest, heart and soul. The country we live in is brutal and beautiful at the same time.”
With a great deal of passion and experience on display, this is not a show you will want to miss. You can go to the Diesel website: dieselmuisc.com.au/shows for more details.

If there’s one thing you can count on in Hinchinbrook, it’s that when our community comes together, big things happen, and the whole region proved it. Thanks to an extraordinary show of local support, Ingham is set to host the Tones and I concert, with the Ingham Showgrounds locked-in as the concert venue. The first round of 3000 tickets have been sold and the excitement is already buzzing from one end of the district to the other. Many out-of-towners have already booked up local stays and many eager businesses are making plans to fully capitalise on this Tones & I boom.
Hinchinbrook Shire Council Mayor Ramon Jayo said the result is a testament to what makes the Hinchinbrook community truly unique.
“We’ve got ordinary people doing extraordinary things — and that’s the magic of this place,” Mayor Jayo said.
“A huge congratulations to Justine Stoddart. From serving pizzas to sparking a community-wide movement, she’s shown what one passionate local can achieve. Justine, take a bow.”
The Mayor also paid tribute to the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and residents who backed the push with enthusiasm and genuine Hinchinbrook spirit.
“This was a whole-of-community effort. A round of applause to our Chamber, our businesses and every local who clicked, shared, voted and cheered this on,” he said. “When Hinchinbrook pulls together, there’s nothing we can’t do.”
Council will continue working closely with event organisers and will share full concert details as they’re confirmed.
Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce President Mary Brown said the campaign showcased the strength of local collaboration.
Family Owned Established 1997
“This is what happens when we unite behind a common goal,” Ms Brown said. “The energy and determination from every corner of the community has been incredible — and now we get to celebrate with an event that will put Ingham on the map.”
Campaign lead Justine Stoddart said the result was beyond her wildest dreams.
“I’m just blown away,” Ms Stoddart said. “What started as a simple idea turned into something so much bigger because everyone jumped in to help. This is for Hinchinbrook — and I can’t wait to see the joy it brings.”
Tones and I made the official announcement on her Facebook page, saying:
“So we have decided to add 5 more shows. However, the first show on the 20th of February will be in…
Ingham!!!! I have seen it all! You guys went HARD — I can’t wait to come to your beautiful town!
We can’t wait to meet you all! We’ll visit as many small businesses as possible too! Now I need recommendations — where should we eat, stay, go? Experience?! Tones is coming! There are 4 more shows to come. Keep your eyes peeled! It’s not over yet! Love you.”
For now, Ingham and the Hinchinbrook region are savouring the moment — and gearing up for something amazing, with many plans in the works to make the weekend Tones & I come to Ingham a very special one.
Justine Stoddart has launched a new Facebook page after the success of the ‘Get “Tones AND I” to come to Ingham’ page. The new page, ‘Let’s TONES it up Ingham’, is designed to:
“show Tones and everyone visiting our wonderful slice of heaven for the weekend what we have to offer, food, clothing,
accommodation, entertainment, tourism experiences. Let’s put our community on show,” Ms Stoddart wrote.

The Hinchinbrook community got hyped up with the launch of a fantastic campaign – to get Tones and I to perform in Ingham!
For those who are unaware, Tones and I (a major pop singer) announced on her Facebook page that she would perform a concert in a random town. As per Tones' request, to enter the competition, a Facebook page was to be created, and the community with the most “noise” (comments, shares and likes) would win.
A Facebook page was created by a member of the community and called: Get “TONES AND I” to come to Ingham, and it saw a lot of traction with locals, businesses, and even our local member Wayde Chisea getting behind it and making a post with many were hilariously photoshopped images of Tones joining in the local comunity.
With the page amassing more than 1000 members in just a week, Hinchinbrook showed how they could all stand together to try and get the popstar to play our little regional town.
Thanks everyone, even the flashmobbers who got out to dance, you really put on a good show as the community screamed:
"Let's get Tones and I to come to Ingham!"
