Social Media Myths Can Cause Cancer

Social Media Myths Can Cause Cancer

Queenslanders Urged To Stick To Science As Melanoma Rates Remain Highest Worldwide Health experts are urging Queenslanders to rely on proven medical advice, not social media myths, when it comes to sun safety, as the state continues to record the highest melanoma rates in the world. Dermatologist Associate Professor Erin McMeniman, from Princess Alexandra Hospital and the University of Queensland’s School of Medicine, says misinformation about sunscreen is spreading online at an alarming rate. “Particularly in Queensland, most people receive enough sun exposure to produce vitamin D simply through their daily incidental activities, such as hanging out the washing or checking the letterbox,” she said. She warns that unprotected sun exposure remains the leading cause of melanoma and other skin cancers, with 4,085 Queenslanders diagnosed in 2021 and 385 losing their lives. “Skin damage can occur after 10 minutes exposure when the UV index is at 3 or above. In Queensland, the UV index is 3 or above all year round, even in winter,” she said. In recent weeks, UV levels have reached 14 and 15, classified as “extreme”, further emphasising the need for regular sun protection. Despite these well-established risks, a range of myths persist online, including claims that sunscreen causes cancer, that tans prevent sunburn, or that darker-skinned people cannot get skin cancer. Assoc Prof McMeniman says these claims are not only false, but dangerous. “Unprotected sun exposure has been proven to cause cancer.” She adds that sunscreen found in make-up is rarely strong enough to provide real protection. “You need SPF30 or higher rating to be protected against sun exposure,” she said. “If it’s not SPF30 or above, you should be wearing additional sunscreen under your makeup when you’re in the sun for an extended period.” Assoc Prof McMeniman says one of the biggest concerns is the rising number of Queensland children experiencing sunburn, with nearly half reporting at least one burn in the past year. “Sunburn in childhood, frequent sunburn and sunburn that blisters the skin all increase a person’s susceptibility to UV-related cancers,” she said. Adults over 60 remain the most at-risk group due to limited sun safety education when they were young. However, she says younger generations are benefiting from decades of awareness campaigns, with melanoma rates now slightly declining in those under 40. As Queensland heads into another Summer of intense UV levels, the message from experts remains clear: slip, slop, slap and slide, every day.

Bushtucker Bliss

Bushtucker Bliss

There’s nothing quite like the taste of homegrown bushtucker. Bringing native Australian plants into your garden is a delicious way to connect with the land and enjoy fresh, seasonal flavours straight from your backyard. Here are four native plants that are easy to grow and a joy to harvest. Riberry Riberry, also known as lilly pilly, is a versatile shrub or small tree that brightens the garden with its glossy foliage and colourful fruit. The berries have a unique, spicy flavour with hints of clove and cinnamon, making them ideal for jams, sauces, or desserts. It's a magnet for birds and pollinators, so while you’re enjoying the fruits, your garden is also supporting local wildlife. Kangaroo Apple Kangaroo apple is a striking shrub that offers a distinct visual interest to the garden, with vibrant purple flowers and sweet, tangy fruit. The berries are delicious when fully ripe and can be enjoyed fresh or in creative dishes such as salads or preserves. Lemon Myrtle Lemon myrtle is a fragrant, evergreen plant prized for its intensely citrus-scented leaves. Perfect for teas, marinades, desserts, or sauces, this rainforest native is both ornamental and highly functional. It can be pruned to a manageable size, making it suitable for gardens of any scale. Lemon myrtle’s year-round leaves and aromatic qualities make it a must-have for any bush-tucker garden. Midyim Berry The midyim berry, or midgen berry, is a low-growing shrub with sweet, tangy berries that resemble blueberries. Its copper-toned new growth adds aesthetic charm, and the fruit is perfect for jams, sauces, or simply eating fresh. It also supports pollinators and provides food for native wildlife, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want to cultivate a productive and ecologically friendly space. Why Grow Bushtucker? Native edible plants are naturally adapted to Australian soils and climates, often requiring less water and maintenance than exotic alternatives. They support biodiversity, offering food and habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife. And, of course, they taste incredible, fresh, unique, and full of nutrients. A true taste of Australian bush bliss.

Rachel Cauchis' Newest Optometrist Joining the team around the start of May, the practice’s newest optometrist has quickly settled into his role and has now been here for around seven months. When asked how he is finding it, he laughed, saying how much he enjoyed the office culture, showing he has meshed well with the other optometrists and enjoys the light-hearted environment of the workplace. Originally from Sydney, he studied optometry at the University of New South Wales. His move north came after a rural placement where he was encouraged to get in touch. After a phone call with Travis Cauchi the practice manager and co-owner, he decided to take a chance, packed everything up and thought, “Why not give it a go?” In practice, one of his favourite pieces of equipment is the slit lamp, which gives a magnified 3D view of the interior structures of the eye and allows him to closely examine eye anatomy and detect potential eye disease. He has a strong interest in picking up and managing eye disease, particularly in a regional setting where access to specialist care can be limited. He enjoys working closely with visiting ophthalmologists and doing his best to manage patients locally when travel is difficult. He sees professional development as something that happens every day, learning through experience and exposure to a wide variety of cases. While most of his patients are elderly, they are also his favourites. He enjoys their life stories, their humour and the genuine appreciation they show, which he finds incredibly rewarding. Outside of work, he enjoys exploring local waterfalls, travelling to Cairns and Townsville, and playing basketball with the local community. He is rarely without his film camera and considers himself more of a beach person, happy to sit by the water for hours.

New Crocodile Management Plan To Prioritise Public Safety

New Crocodile Management Plan To Prioritise Public Safety

The Queensland Government has delivered its first major update to crocodile management in almost a decade. The new plan prioritises community safety, with increased patrols and an expansion of removal zones. It represents a commonsense approach to crocodile management. The Government’s Queensland Crocodile Management Plan puts human safety first and was developed with feedback from communities in North and Far North Queensland, including Ingham. The plan will implement increased crocodile management measures, including more patrols in high-risk areas and expanded removal zones. This evidence-based strategy demonstrates the Government’s commitment to listening to local communities and has been shaped by expert recommendations and extensive scientific research. Key changes for Ingham: Tyto Wetlands in Ingham to be upgraded to an Active Removal Zone, with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service to undertake proactive patrols of this area and any crocodile found to be removed. Regional communities will continue to be consulted on the plan, with a designated four-week annual consultation period and updates made on a rolling basis. A mandatory review will be conducted every five years to ensure the plan continues to reflect the needs of the communities it impacts. The Government will also continue to remove crocodiles from the wild that pose a threat to public safety. Member for Hinchinbrook Wayde Chiesa said the people of his electorate voted for change, and he was proud to deliver it in his first week as local Member. “Hinchinbrook now has a seat at the government table and work has already begun to deliver the fresh start we promised – starting with a new crocodile management plan that puts the safety of people first in Ingham,” Mr Chiesa said. “Upgrading Tyto Wetlands to an Active Removal Zone is the commonsense approach that’s needed and has been lacking for far too long under the former Government.” Mayor of Hinchinbrook regional council, Ramon Jayo, said it was a practical step to protect the area but to remain Crocwise. "TYTO Wetlands and the surrounding precinct remain one of our most popular destinations. While crocodiles are a natural part of life in North Queensland, proactive management is essential to keep visitors safe. Recent changes by the Queensland Government will allow for increased patrols and the targeted removal of crocodiles that pose a risk to the community. Crocodiles are part of our environment, so staying Crocwise is about using common sense—be alert near waterways, keep your distance, and never take chances."

Hiya Hinchinbrook Shire! I hope everyone had an amazing chocolate-filled Easter weekend, I know I did.

I recently volunteered at the 69th Palm Creek Park Run as a photographer, snapping everyone's amazing feat at getting up early and and going for a 5k jog. Those who crossed the finish line were treated to some chocolate eggs and boy did I need one after running around that course with a camera in hand! Thanks to the amazing volunteers who make Park Run happen, between the Park Run at Palm Creek in Ingham, and at the Cardwell Foreshore, you guys do great work.

ANZAC Day is always an important time of year to remember those who served, Lest We Forget. My great-grandfather is the person I think about most when this day arrives. He served in WWII as a mechanic servicing aircrafts when they came in for repairs, landing in the middle of the ocean on the huge aircraft carriers, the ships that served as floating airbases.

I think of his bravery and that of the many others who held courage in their hearts when facing such a traumatic thing as war. This edition features a poem written about the Australian soldiers service in both world wars, it's stirring, striking and encourages reflection.

Mother's Day is just around the corner so don't forget to order that bouquet and tie a ribbon around a bottle of champers!

Victoria

Fun Fact: Carnations are a great flower to use for both ANZAC and Mother's Day. Their floral language symbolises love, gratitude and never forgetting someone.

Bungs! Don't forget the bungs!

April 29, 2025

As the busy boating season continues it's a good time to remind everyone, especially those new to boating, to double-check the bungs before launching.

A bung is a small but vital plug that seals the drainage holes in your boat, usually found on the transom (the flat part at the back). These holes are designed to let water drain out when the boat is on land, but before you launch, they must be sealed. If the bungs are left out, water can rush in fast once the boat is in the water, and it doesn’t take much for a boat to quickly become unstable or even sink.

Forgetting them can happen to anyone so before you back down the ramp, take a moment to walk around and make sure the bungs are securely fitted and tightened. It's a simple check that could save your boat, your gear, and your day. Even an experienced boaties can make the small mistake at some point. But it’s easy to avoid with a simple pre-launch check.

Quick Launch Prep Reminder:
Fit and tighten the bungs.
Check fuel levels and battery.
Secure all gear and safety equipment.
Confirm life jackets are on board.
Test the bilge pump (if fitted).
Check the weather and tides.
Make sure you have a working radio to call for help if needed.

Taking a minute to run through a basic checklist can save you from a lot of stress later. Stay safe and enjoy your time on the water!

Ingham's Kennel Club Barks Up The Showgrounds

April 29, 2025

Over the weekend, the Ingham Kennel Club hosted six rounds of dog shows, featuring judges from across Australia who rotated to ensure fair and balanced competition. Dogs were entered into one of seven group categories, with the Toy Group attracting the largest number of entries.

Sunday's shows saw the Italian Greyhound emerge as a standout, making up 20 of the 170 total entries across the weekend. Unique and rarely seen breeds like the Xoloitzcuintli and Briard added excitement to the event, offering a rare look for spectators unfamiliar with these distinctive dogs.

Judging was conducted in depth by Stacey Sewell (W.A.), Tim Thomas (Q.L.D.), Peter Martin (S.A.), and Monica McCaffery (S.A.), each aiming to assess dogs fairly against established breed standards.

Competitors were judged across categories based on sex, age, and neuter status, progressing through dog and bitch challenges, group competitions, and culminating in the crowning of titles such as 'Best in Breed', 'Best in Group', and ultimately 'Best in Show.'

The weekend also highlighted the next generation of dog handlers. Junior handlers, like young Wyatt, can begin competing from as young as seven years old, often showing dogs owned by others who are unable to enter the ring themselves. Events like the Ingham Dog Show and other rural competitions, play a crucial role in encouraging new exhibitors and fostering a love for responsible dog ownership.

Above all, the show offered an important reminder of the value of responsible breeding and the role of purebred dogs in preserving breed standards, to ensure the health, welfare, and future of every breed showcased.

WE STAND TO REMEMBER Community Gathers To Commemorate ANZAC Day

April 30, 2025

This year's ANZAC Day saw hundreds turn out to remember the efforts of Australia and New Zealand's great service men and women. Veterans, schools, clubs and businesses poured into the streets to march in grand parades, and packed in close to attend services held across the Hinchinbrook Shire. Beautiful wreaths were lain and the bugles mournful tones echoed across respectful silences as flags were lowered to half mast. A gunfire breakfast, coffee and traditional ANZAC biscuits kept everyone going in the spirit of remembrance as the crowds all murmured in unison "Lest We Forget."

ANZAC Day Commemorated Across The Region

On the 25th of April, 2025, crowds flocked to services held in honour of our ANZACs. Held in recognition of their efforts and in many cases their sacrifices, in the wars that gave Australia the freedoms it has today.

Many of the services featured beautiful speeches from veterans, current soldiers, and local members of the community, along with heartfelt prayers led by Father John. Crowds of spectators flocked to and cheer on the parades, clapping as their friends or schoolmates marched by the official Saluting Officer - Lieutenant Clavin

Soldiers of the Alfa Company 1 RAR where the main catafalque party at all services this year, excluding the service held at Forrest Beach where it was the Australian Air Force Cadets of the 103 Squadron who held the honour.

Nick Dametto MP made the huge effort to attended every service saying; "I think Anzac Day in Hinchinbrook is very special as there's an opportunity for everyone to get involved. The weather played its part today, and the crowds have turned out in droves.

"We started off with the dawn service in Ingham, headed down for breakfast at the RSL, then out to the cemetery for sunrise. After that we attended the beautiful service in Forrest Beach, with the sun coming up over Palm Island, it was perfect.

"Then we all shot into Halifax for the unique service there. Listening to the school children sing as a choir, singing not only Australian, but also the New Zealand national anthem was very heartwarming."

Deputy Mayor Mary Brown was in attendance and remarked; "This morning's dawn service was the biggest I've ever seen. It was phenomenal. The children, the families that turned put and so respectful. It just gives you heart for the generations coming through showing that respect, and knowing what Anzac is and what it means to our community."

After attending the main ceremony of the day, the grand parade and service held in Ingham Mr Dametto held hopes for the future saying: "I look forward to seeing the large crowds once again, it's been beautiful today and I look forward to bigger and better crowds next year, even though these will be hard to beat."

ANZAC Day Commemorations 2025
Congratulations Hinchinbrook. Give yourselves a big pat on the back for the overwhelming display of support of our Anzac Day remembrance services. All services at Ingham, Halifax and Forrest Beach were very well attended, clearly evidencing that our district does not and will not forget the sacrifices of so many who fought and still fight for our country.

I am very proud of the way our community, and in particular the children of our district, and the very young children whom attended the dawn service at Ingham I might add, paid honour to the memory of all those gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives in service to their country.

I would like to thank our community for your participation and observance of our Anzac tradition. Thank you to each and everyone of you involved in arrangements for the services throughout the district, and a special mention and thanks again to our schools and the teachers of each school who marshalled and marched with all the children, making the day for our diggers.

Future generations need to be reminded that the freedom we so enjoy and the happiness that such freedom brings in our lives came at a cost and the children of today are the people who will continue to carry on that memory for our future generations to come.

Exceptional Disaster Assistance Recovery Grant
After much lobbying and advocacy regarding the effects on small business, inconsequence of the deenergising of the Ingham substation, the Federal and State Governments have now announced that they will look to provide financial support to businesses affected by way of an exceptional disaster assistance recovery grant for perishable stock. The grant will provide financial support to small and family businesses in Ingham and surrounding areas that lost power for five consecutive days or more due to the deenergising of the Ingham substation in February 2025.

The decision recognises the particular circumstances that affected our district, the eligibility criteria initially specifying that only premises that suffered flood water penetration were eligible for disaster recovery assistance grants. Many businesses suffered significant loss of stored product because of power failure, as against water inundation, as a direct result of water inundation at the substation, through no fault of their own and that circumstance has now been accepted.

I would like to thank our State Minister for Small and Family Business Steven Minnikin MP and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority on appreciating the special circumstance and concerns raised on the matter and for advocating on Council's behalf with the Australian Federal Government to assist our business recovery program.

Planting and Growing A Bloom That Lasts

April 29, 2025

Carnations, with their beautiful frilled blooms and rich history in the language of flowers, are a wonderful addition to any home garden. Symbolising love, admiration, and affection, they are not only meaningful but also surprisingly easy to grow with a little care.

Choosing the Right Spot: Carnations thrive best in full sun. Choose a location in your garden that gets at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight each day. They prefer well-drained soil as too much moisture around the roots can lead to rot, so raised beds or sandy soils work particularly well.

Planting Tips: Seed should be planted in cooler temperatures so now is perfect! If transplanting seedlings, space them about 20–30cm apart to give each plant room to flourish. Gently firm the soil around the roots and water lightly.

Caring for Carnations: Water carnations moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly. Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser once a month during the growing season to encourage healthy blooms. Removing spent flowers will keep the plants looking tidy and encourage more flowering throughout the season.

A Lasting Bloom: Carnations are prized not only for their beauty in the garden but also for their long vase life when cut. Their sturdy stems and vibrant colours make them a favourite for bouquets, particularly around Mother’s Day when pink carnations — symbols of a mother's love — are in full demand. With a little sunlight and care, carnations will reward you with colour, fragrance, and classic charm season after season, you could even press them to keep them forever.

Mix and match! Carnations come in so many varieties and colours.

Honouring Our Heroes

April 22, 2025

As we approach ANZAC Day 2025, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of our servicemen and women.

It is a time when Australians and New Zealanders unite to honour not only the original ANZACs who landed at Gallipoli over a century ago, but all who have worn our nations’ uniforms in times of war, conflict, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions.

Their bravery and loyal sense of duty continue to inspire us and form a cornerstone of our national identity.

In Hinchinbrook, ANZAC Day holds a special significance. Our community has a rich history of military service, and the local commemorations are a testament to the respect and gratitude we hold for our defence personnel.

From the stillness of the dawn services to the marching parades, every gathering no matter the size, is filled with pride. Schools, RSLs, local emergency services, and community groups come together each year to march, lay wreaths, and pay tribute to those who gave everything for us.

It’s important that as we remember those who fought for our freedom, we also recognise the contribution of the families and communities that supported them. War and conflict does not just impact on those who serve, but also on the families and loved ones left behind. Lest we forget.

April 23, 2025

Good Morning Hinchinbrook,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful Easter holiday with family and friends – I know I certainly did! I brought my mum and son to town, and they had a great time hanging out at the playparks, eating at local cafes, and swimming in the pool at our accommodation.

This was my first time back in Ingham since the floods. Although I felt connected to the event through our newspaper coverage, local relationships, and, of course, helping manage the welfare of our local staff, this was the first time I had actually ‘hit the ground’ myself.

It was heartwarming to see things reasonably back to normal, and I’m sure it has taken an incredible effort from everyone to get to this point. As many of you will know, our newspaper was only 10 weeks old when the floods hit, and we certainly felt the full impact on our small publication. I want to say a huge thank you to the Council for supporting the newspaper throughout the event, and to the incredible local businesses that continued to advertise with us, despite the hardships they were undoubtedly facing.

Without these partnerships, we wouldn’t be able to produce this lovely local paper, so please show your support by reading their ads, shopping at their businesses, and supporting them, as they are supporting our community.

While I was in town, I met with Deputy Mayor Mary Brown, who emphasised that the most important message right now is to reassure the rest of Queensland that the region is open for business. With that in mind, we’ll be launching some promotional articles across all four of our papers in the coming weeks, aiming to attract more visitors to shop local and explore the area.

Additionally, our talented Sales Account Manager, Sherie Hensler-Adams, is excited to launch our glossy travel publication in the region this month. Printing 15,000 copies every eight weeks, Tripping Magazine has been running for over 10 years and is available for free at tourist hotspots from Mackay to the Whitsundays, Burdekin, Townsville, and now... Hinchinbrook.

If you’d like more information about how you can be part of a brand-new dedicated Hinchinbrook section of Tripping Magazine, please reach out directly to Sherie – her contact number is listed next to this column.
