This Week On The Herbert In 1869

On the 6th of September 1869, William Mc Dowell took up a conditional selection of 300 acres. He and Maurice Geoffrey O’Connell, who took up a 360 selection on 1st May 1869, are credited as the first Europeans to attempt to grow cane on the Herbert. Their land was later taken up by the Mackenzie family that established Gairloch.
