Local sporting talent was recognised at the North Queensland Sports Star Awards last weekend with Joe Pennisi receiving the Alan Ticehurst Memorial Service to Sport Award.
“Joe has given so much of his time and dedication to rugby league in Hinchinbrook over the years, and it was wonderful to see him recognised for everything he has done for our community,” Councillor Donna Marbelli shared.
Joe has dedicated countless volunteer hours to sporting in Ingham, including his time as former President for the Herbert River Crushers.
Local swimming star Lucas Masters was also recognised as a finalist for Junior Sports Star of the Year.
Currently the 2026 Queensland Country Champion in the 50m freestyle, Lucas competed in the Australian Championships in the Gold Coast where he took 0.55 seconds off his personal best time. Now, he has his sights set on the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.

“It really was a special night, and I loved seeing so many people recognised for their achievements and contributions to sport in the North. A big Congratulations to all,” Councillor Marbelli shared.
“And a huge thank you to the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) for putting on such a fantastic event.
“So proud of our Hinchinbrook sporting community and the people who continue to make a difference.”
