Did You Know?
The Heaviest Insect In Australia Was Only Recently Discovered Nearby
In 2025, scientists announced the discovery of Acrophylla alta, a giant stick insect from the Wet Tropics of North Queensland. Measuring up to 40 centimetres long and weighing around 44 grams, it may be Australia's heaviest insect. Researchers believe it remained undiscovered because it lives high in remote rainforest canopies.
It's a reminder that even today, North Queensland's rainforests are still revealing secrets. Universities and wildlife documentaries often find themselves beneath the ancient trees learning, discovering, and documenting many reclusive and widely unknown species.
