There is no better way to experience the colour, character and community spirit of the Burdekin Water Festival than from the middle of Ayr when the Grand Parade rolls into Queen Street on Saturday 5th September.
The parade is the spectacular finale to one of Queensland’s longest-running community festivals, bringing together local businesses, schools, community groups, festival ambassadors and creative minds for an evening of colour and celebration. Floats will make their way through the heart of Ayr, giving spectators a front-row view of the pride and personality that makes the Burdekin such a vibrant part of North Queensland.
Kari Ravizza, Burdekin Water Festival Ambassador Coordinator said this year's theme was all about the locals and what makes Burdekin special.
“This year’s theme, ‘River Country, Burdekin Style’ is really about celebrating who we are and what makes the Burdekin such a special place to live. Our abundance of water and the mighty Burdekin River is at the heart of our community and takes us back to the very heart of why the Burdekin Water Festival began. River Country also celebrates our lifestyle, our people, our industries and that strong community spirit the Burdekin is known for,” Kari said.
As the final floats pass through Queen Street, the celebration keeps moving with the Street Party. The town centre transforms into a lively festival precinct, with market stalls, food stalls, rides, music and entertainment keeping families and visitors entertained well into the evening.
One of the highlights of this year’s entertainment will be GEED UP, making its Burdekin debut with a high-energy performance combining live music, comedy, dance, acrobatics, DJing and plenty of audience interaction.
“We’re really excited about this year’s entertainment. GEED UP will be performing in the Burdekin for the first time and they bring something completely different — they’re energetic, interactive and a whole lot of fun. Along with our fantastic local entertainment, we think there’ll be something for all ages and plenty to keep the crowd entertained throughout the night.”
The Street Party also provides the setting for the announcements of the festival competitions, including the Photography competition, Garden competition, Window display competition and the Float competition.
“We are grateful to the business community of the Burdekin for providing generous sponsorship of our festival competitions. Their support helps us continue to offer these competitions and celebrate the wonderful talent within our community. We encourage everyone to support those businesses who support the festival, we simply couldn’t do it without them,” said Kari.
With free entry and entertainment for all ages, the Grand Parade and Street Party are a chance to gather with friends, bring the family and experience the Burdekin at its most colourful.
From the first float to the final song, Queen Street will become the centre of River Country - Burdekin Style.
