Four of Ingham’s promising junior tennis players recently travelled to Townsville to compete in the latest round of the Junior Development Series (JDS), a popular tournament format that matches players by skill level rather than age.

Scott, Macie, Miles and Riley represented Ingham Tennis in the day-long event, enjoying the chance to test their abilities against players from across the region. With matches determined by ability, not age, the competition often sees younger players facing off against much older opponents, making for exciting and unpredictable matchups.

While our juniors didn’t place this time, they gained valuable experience and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The tournament also offered plenty of opportunities for socialising with players from other towns, and the perfect weather made it an even more enjoyable outing.

The focus now shifts to Ingham, which will host its own JDS tournament towards the end of the month. Local juniors are encouraged to sign up and experience the fun, friendly and competitive environment the JDS series is known for.

In a powerful act of community support, the Ingham Lions Club Executive recently presented a cheque to the organisers of the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride (TCBR), helping drive momentum towards their $400,000 fundraising goal for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA). Their donation contributes to the impressive $360,079 already raised, each dollar going toward lifesaving research and care for children fighting cancer.

Sixty years ago, childhood cancer was nearly always fatal. Today, thanks to medical research and community-driven fundraising, over 80% of children survive. But there’s still work to do—more than 1,000 young Australians are diagnosed with cancer each year, and tragically, three children die from the disease every week.

Childhood cancer isn’t caused by lifestyle or preventable choices. It strikes without warning, demanding care, compassion and critical funding. By supporting the TCBR and the CCIA, the Ingham Lions Club is helping to give every child the best chance at life and the care they need and deserve.

In a proud moment for the Forrest Beach Surf Life Saving Club, members recently welcomed Surf Life Saving Queensland President Gerard O’Brien and Surf Life Saving Australia President John Baker AM ESM for a heartfelt visit. The Presidents travelled to Forrest Beach to personally thank the club for its extraordinary efforts during February’s devastating floods. Local member for Hinchinbrook, Nick Dametto, was also there to show his recognition alongside the Presidents in a powerful reminder of the club’s vital role not only in coastal safety, but also in times of community crisis.

The visit came not long after Forrest Beach SLSC were named Club of the Year at the 2024–25 North Barrier Branch Awards for the second year in a row. Also receiving the Innovation Award for its flood response, alongside individual accolades that reflect the strength and dedication of its membership. Honourees included Lenny Chiesa (Clive Hammond Medal), Pam Chiesa (Team Manager of the Year), Therese Reid (Volunteer of the Year), Jett Reid (Junior Lifesaver of the Year), Evandah Bann (Athlete of the Year), and the U19 Relay Team (Team of the Year).

Despite wild weather, the strong turnout of enthusiastic nippers was a clear sign that the spirit of Forrest Beach SLSC is as strong as ever. A successful season launch and sign-on day, these young surf lifesavers represent the future of the club, and their commitment, even in less-than-perfect conditions, speaks volumes. It was a proud reminder that the values of teamwork, courage and service continue to thrive in the next generation.

The courts are heating up at the Ingham Basketball Association Inc. every weekend with social runs scheduled intermediately into the late afternoon each Sunday.

Players of all skill levels are invited to shoot their shot and get involved in the fun with mixed juniors (aged up to 13 years old) set to take to the court from 2:30pm to 3:30pm for just $2 each, followed by mixed open men and women from 3:30pm to 5:30pm for $5 per person.

The weekly games were officially launched on Sunday the 13th of July, and were warmly welcomed by the community, leaving locals looking forward to spending some time on the court.

Held at the Ingham State High School Auditorium, entry to the courts are through the front gate, and the Ingham Basketball Association Inc. hope to welcome more and more players to partake in the beloved sport this weekend.

Lucinda Coast Guard volunteers were contacted on July 19th's wet and windy morning, and were tasked with launching their large rescue vessel "Snow Stafford", and to proceed to Zoe Bay on Hinchinbrook Island.

A couple with two small children had been camping over there for several days, but awoke that morning to discover that the weather had severely deteriorated, and the seas were too big and dangerous for them to attempt the return trip to Dungeness. An anchored yacht was luckily able to contact the Coast Guard for them, in a place where phone and radio reception is usually very poor.

The Coast Guard crew arrived after a very rough trip and managed to transfer the wife and children into the rescue vessel, while the husband steered the tinnie while under tow. It was then a very slow and rough trip back, with very sea-sick passengers, but all were landed safely at Dungeness after a delay due to the low tide.

People who go camping on our wonderful islands should be aware of the weather conditions for several days beyond their planned return date, to ensure that they can cover the distance back safely.

The Noorla Ladies welcomed players from both the Ingham and Macknade Bowls Clubs as the three clubs faced off for the coveted Noorla Ladies Trophy.

The greens were in great condition, with friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship on full display throughout the day. After several closely contested games, it was the Ingham side who emerged victorious, securing the top spot and taking home the trophy. Hosts Noorla put in a strong showing to finish in second place, while Macknade rounded out the results in third.

In the Consistency Singles, M. Owen defeated I. Byrnes 156 to 94, while N. Mammarella secured a 155 to 135 win over A. Foti. In the Championship Triples, the team of K. Rotondo, J. Craven and S. Ryan claimed an 18–11 victory over G. Wright, L. Di Bella and E. Piotto. Meanwhile, M. Spano, J. Fenoglio and N. Evans triumphed 26–11 over B. Eddleston, J. Casanovas and L. Melvin.

Nominations Open For The 2025 Hinchinbrook Awards

The Ingham Lions Club is now accepting nominations for this year’s Sportstar of the Year Awards, to be held on Tuesday, 2 September 2025 at the RSL Ingham.

These prestigious awards have a proud history, with the first ceremony held in 1977. Forty-eight years on, the tradition continues, and this year’s winners will go on to represent the Hinchinbrook Shire at the NQ Sports Foundation – NQ Sportstar Awards in Townsville on Saturday, 25 October 2025.

To be eligible, nominees must be Hinchinbrook residents or represent a local organisation, with achievements in their chosen sport between 1 September 2024 and the nomination closing date.

Junior Sportstar of the Year
Masters Sportstar of the Year
Para-athlete Sportstar of the Year
Team of the Year
Recognition of Service Award – for a volunteer who has gone above and beyond for sport in our district across many years of service.

Despite the rain in Ingham, the Parkrunners were out this weekend enjoying a morning of exercise. Palm Creek saw visitors from all over; Cairns, Rockhampton, Brisbane, Adelaide, and even the Red Earth Running squad came down from Cardwell to give Palm Creek a go. Two of them achieved PBs along with three others and a new runner took out the top spot this week.

Luckily for Cardwell, the rain stayed away. They had a turnout of 6 parkrunners, and one achieved a PB. It was only regulars this week but that made for a very cosy running experience as they all finished the course quite close together in time.

Remember, you can grab a coffee or post-parkrun brekkie with friends afterwards. Dry out at a local cafe and warm those hands around a steaming cup of hot chocolate with the kids.

The Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre (HCSC) Seniors Morning Coffee Club proudly hosted an amazing Christmas in July celebration, bringing together seniors from across our region for a day of good food, fun, and festive cheer. What began as a planned gathering for 80 quickly grew to a sold-out event, welcoming 120 guests who filled the Noorla Bowls Club in Ingham to capacity. Our usual Coffee Club of around 40 members more than tripled in size for this special day, with the added delight of 21 visitors from Rollingstone Neighbourhood Centre and groups from Lifelong Supports and Blue Care.

These valuable partnerships and events help create meaningful social connections and reduce isolation among our seniors, something our Centre is deeply committed to. Adding an informative touch, we were joined by two wonderful representatives from ADA Australia, who gave an insightful presentation about their fully funded advocacy services for older persons, highlighting vital support available within our community.

It was a feast to remember as guests were treated to a traditional Christmas meal, lovingly prepared by the talented team at Oasis Café. The generous spread featured baked ham, roasted pork, lamb, and vegetables, pasta and salad, and a crowd-favourite lasagne made by our very own HCSC Men’s Group facilitator, Angelo — a true kitchen whiz! To finish, a classic trifle provided a sweet end to a hearty meal.

The holiday spirit was alive and well, with many attendees arriving dressed in their best Christmas-themed outfits. Best Dressed prizes went to Veronica as The Grinch, Jimmy as Woody, Carol as Mrs Claus, Gordon as Christmas Bob Marley, and young Tara, whose festive energy lit up the room. The celebration continued with lively Bingo games and a spirited round of Trivia that had everyone scratching their heads and laughing in equal measure.

A special thank you goes to Rachele from the Lions Club, who not only brought along the iconic Lions Christmas Cakes, one of which was kindly donated as a raffle prize, but also generously lent a hand serving meals and ensuring everyone was well looked after. Events like these are only possible through the dedication of our wonderful volunteers and the unwavering support of the HCSC Staff. Your time, energy, and community spirit are the beating heart of these special gatherings.

Players from all over the region will converge on the Ingham Bowls Club this weekend for the 25th Annual Invitation Fours Carnival. Competitors from Cairns, Innisfail, Tully, Townsville, Hughenden, Proserpine, and Ingham will take to the greens in what promises to be a weekend of quality bowls and friendly competition.

The public is warmly encouraged to come along, support the club, and enjoy some great matches across both days. Spectators can expect a welcoming and social atmosphere with plenty of action to watch, and Sunday will feature speeches and a trophy presentation to close the carnival.

Excitement was in the air as local kids took to the court for a free tennis session, thanks to Powerlink’s community support. Under the guidance of coach Tom, the group got straight into action, learning the basics and getting a feel for the game.

Tom took time to explain each drill, demonstrating the skills and making sure everyone knew what to do before giving it a go themselves. From holding the racquet to moving their feet, the kids were engaged, focused, and most of all, having fun.

It was a great introduction to tennis and a chance for kids to try something new in a friendly and supportive setting.

After a much-needed rest day, the wounded Gilroy squad faced Good Shepherd Mt Isa in a determined clash. Gilroy started strong, heading into halftime locked at 12-all. Mt Isa regained control early in the second half, maintaining a narrow lead until a promising line break by Shaun Devietti appeared likely to swing momentum back in Gilroy’s favour. However, a final pass to Jack Butcher was ruled forward by touch judge Jaidyn Spina, halting the comeback. Gilroy were unable to recover, eventually going down 20–12.

The final game of the carnival saw Gilroy face Chisholm Catholic College in a rematch of last year’s fixture. With only 14 players available, Gilroy were up against it from the start. Despite this, captain Shaun Devietti led by example, scoring two impressive tries. In the dying moments of the game, Nick Coco powered over the line to secure an 18–12 victory, ending the carnival on a high and doing the school’s Year 12 veterans proud.

Gilroy concluded the carnival with 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. The coaching staff expressed immense pride in the team's grit and determination, noting the players’ respectful conduct both on and off the field. Sincere thanks were also extended to the parents and supporters for their encouragement throughout the week.

In other sporting success, the Gilroy MTB Team delivered an outstanding performance at the Cycle de Vie Rockwheelers Interschool Mountain Bike Race in Townsville. The team of seven riders — Josh, Hayden, Hudson, Jessy, Rhys, Lucas and Justin — tackled their first-ever competition with impressive results, finishing 8th out of 27 schools and 213 riders.

Competing across enduro, downhill and trail events, the team demonstrated strong spirit, resilience, and teamwork throughout. Their dedication and unity stood out as they supported one another from start to finish. The teams now look ahead to their next challenges, fired up and ready!

The Herbert River Under-13s proudly flew the flag for their district at the Nate Myles Cup in Gordonvale over the weekend. Hosted by Southern Suburbs Rugby League Club, the two-day carnival drew teams from across North Queensland, and Herbert River impressed all with their grit, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Herbert River 16 – Norths Devils Mackay Black 12
The team hit the ground running, edging out the Devils in a polished performance. Josh Gurnick-Stagnitta scored a quick-fire double, while Cooper Bligh capitalised on a classy kick from Adam Mammino. Cody Astorquia bulldozed over for a try of his own, with Josh earning Man of the Match honours.

Game 2: Rolling On
Herbert River 16 – Magpies Mackay 4
Confidence grew in Game 2 as Josh crossed twice again. Corbin Bartolini darted over from dummy half, and Adam finished a strong team effort to score. Cody, Cooper, Logan Butler, Laikyn Walsh and Hunter Gilmore all played key roles in both attack and defence, with Cooper named Man of the Match.

Game 3: Lights, Pressure and Poise
Herbert River 8 – Southern Suburbs 12
In a thrilling Saturday night clash under lights, and with Nate Myles watching, Herbert River pushed the host team all the way. Josh added two more tries, bringing his tally to six. Odin Marsh was outstanding in the middle, earning Man of the Match, while Brad Dilena, Charlie Reid and Sam Giuffrida helped guide the team through a tense, physical battle.

Game 4: A Tough Morning
Herbert River 4 – Edmonton Storm 24
The team faced a slick Edmonton outfit and, despite the scoreline, never stopped trying. Benny Blanket crashed over for a try full of grit and earned Man of the Match. Laikyn, Corbin, Noah Copley, Lawson Hennessey and Luke Anthony all stood tall in the face of adversity and showed great versatility.

Game 5: Heart to the End
Herbert River 0 – Brothers Mackay White 8
Determined to finish on a high, the boys dug deep in their final match. Josh again earned praise this time for his defence, and was named Man of the Match. Charlie stepped into dummy half with maturity, and Harry Holland impressed with sharp wing defence.

The squad can now look to the semi-finals with real confidence. Across five games, the boys showed they can match it with the best. It was a weekend filled with growth, memories, and pride for players, coaches, and families alike.

At Artie Gofton Oval

What a day at Artie Gofton Oval as the Crushers took on Charters Towers – and came away with the clean sweep!The Ladies 20-4 and Reserve Grade 36-10 sides put on dominant performances, securing convincing wins and setting the tone for the day.

But it was the A Grade wining the match that had us all on the edge of our seats. With the clock ticking down, Jake Nielsen hit a hole off a sharp short ball from Lachlan Erba, broke the line and found Jayden Sharp in support to score the match-winner on the hooter! Bringing the final score to 16-14 win to the Crushers.

Unreal finish to a huge afternoon of footy – well done to all three grades!

Sixty-four players took to the greens for the annual Allamanda Fours, with visiting teams from Tully, Alligator Creek, Suburban, South Townsville, and Jubilee joining sister clubs Macknade and Noorla for an enjoyable day of competition and camaraderie. The event was proudly sponsored by the Hinchinbrook Shire Council, Wilmar, and Carey Accountants and Financial Planners.

The standout team of the day, and the only one to achieve three wins, was Lynette Melvin, E. Piotto, Luisa Di Bella, and Gina Wright. Congratulations to all players for making it a memorable day on the greens.

In club competitions, the Consistency rounds saw some strong performances, with D. Tomba defeating L. Di Bella 155–135, N. Evans overcoming G. Wright 154–124, and J. Casanovas taking the win over M. Spano 155–105. Meanwhile, in the Championship Triples, the team of K. Rotondo, J. Craven, and S. Ryan delivered a commanding performance, defeating M. Mooree, T. Mawson, and A. Rutherford 24–9.

Social play also brought close contests and plenty of friendly rivalry. J. Johnson, L. Di Bella, and N. Evans edged out I. Byrns, J. Casanovas, and T. Rhodes 13–12 in a nail-biter, while N. Mammerella, A. Foti, and E. Piotto claimed a narrow 22–20 win over B. Eddleston, M. Spano, and J. Fenoglio.
