Wednesday marked a heartfelt moment for the Ingham Ladies Bowls Club as members gathered to farewell one of their own, Trudy Mawson. It was a poignant occasion, with Trudy recognised as a valued and much-loved member of the club. Her presence on and off the green will be missed, with fellow bowlers sharing their appreciation and well wishes for her future. “Trudy, believe it when it is said you held a special place in our hearts,” members said. Following the farewell, social bowls were played in the afternoon, with strong competition across the green. G. Wright, M. Moore, S. Ryan and E. Piotto defeated M. Spano, L. DiBella, L. Melvin and M. Owen 25–19. J. Bell, B. Eddleston, D. Tomba and A. Rutherford recorded an 18–10 win over R. Horton, A. Foti, T. Mawson and T. Rhodes. A. Burns, J. Johnson and N. Evans secured a 27–9 victory against I. Byrns, N. Mammerella and J. Casanovas. Caption: Club members gathered to farewell Trudy. Photo suppl.ied

Independent advocacy is essential in a world where systems are often complex and inaccessible, particularly for people with disabilities. Rights in Action exists to ensure individuals are heard, respected, supported, and empowered to assert their rights. Through individual, self, systemic and citizen advocacy, Rights in Action stands beside people as they navigate decisions that affect their lives- Propelling opportunity and empowerment. This is not about speaking for someone, but about strengthening their voice and ensuring their views are taken seriously. The North Queensland Community Skill Building Program extends this impact through long‑term empowerment. As a federally funded initiative, the program builds awareness and provides accessible information so people with disabilities can develop self‑advocacy skills. This includes toolkits, webinars, online resources, and workshops such as the upcoming NDIS Appeals workshop. Understanding rights and knowing how to respond when challenged is essential to independence and inclusion. Together, independent advocacy and community skill building create meaningful change by shifting power away from systems and towards individuals. Rights in Action shows that advocacy is not just a service- it is a pathway to dignity, confidence, and real choice. In Hinchinbrook there will be a workshop held in Ingham that explores the new NDIS Appeals Toolkit - a simple, practical guide to understanding the NDIS appeals process. WHAT: Free NDIS Appeals Workshop WHEN: Thursday, May 28. 11:00am-1:00pm WHERE: Online, or at the Community Room 14 Macrossan Ave, Ingham

At Palm Creek, it was a bright and fresh morning for our 20 parkrunners, with a gentle breeze making the course all the more enjoyable. Welcoming three newcomers to the Palm Creek track, two from Team Veteran, four PBs were recorded, including the Fastest timer.
Down on the foreshore, 22 parkrunners took to the scenic path under cool, clear skies. Joined by a great mix of locals and visitors, no doubt in town for the UFO festival, with six newcomers stepping onto the course for the first time. Four PBs were also achieved with the encouragement and energy from everyone, creating a morning that reminded us why we love parkrun: fresh air, great company and a shared sense of achievement.

The newly formed Burdekin River Women's Rugby League team showed on Saturday, 2nd August, in Charters Towers just why they could be a force in this year's RLTD women's premiership race.
When both the Herbert River and Burdekin Rugby Leagues had trouble fielding teams in the RLTD ladies competition, it was decided to try a combined team known as Burdekin River with their own sponsors and colours. It has been a success with the team running fourth and very near the top sides, Centrals and Western Lions.
On the 2nd, playing without two star players, Townsville representative Martina Monday and last year's Queensland Country player Toni Daisy, the team had a big win over Charters Towers in the western city by 42 to 18.
The team last Saturday was well led by the halves in Inghams' Paige Horvat and the Burdekins' Abby King. Paige at five eight is a class footballer, and when she decides to go, she is poetry in motion. Paige scored two tries herself, and with Abby was the perfect linchpin for the outside backs. Abby is very quick with a good step, whilst also being a top defender.
Both Paige and Abby crossed for two tries each, but the player who stood out on the score sheet was Tania Krutzfeldt, who crossed for three tries, and they were not gimmes. Tania, a Blackhawk U19 player this season, showed good hands with anticipation to cross.
Every good team has good bookends up front, and this one is not an exception, with Rebekah Pace and Sarah Castles doing the hard work. Another to stand out was Joeleen O'Niell in the centres, with lock Tanley Rowe. The combined team showed they can defend as well as attack.
They led 26 to 6 at the break when the Lady Miners started a comeback second half, scoring 12 points. The visitors then regathered their thoughts and finished the game off by scoring 12 points of their own to record a good, decisive win.
Try scorers for Burdekin River: Tania Krutzfeldt (3), Abby King (2), Paige Horvat (2), Julea Farry (1), Tanley Rowe (1).
Goals: Rebecca Pace (3)
The Burdekin River played the Bowen Seagulls in Ayr on Saturday, 9th August and won with a final score of 80 - 8.

Former players, supporters, and families reunited in Ingham over the weekend of 18–19 July 2025 to celebrate the 55-year-long legacy of the Wallaman Rugby League Club, with attendees travelling from across Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and all corners of Queensland.
Though no longer active, the Wallaman club holds a proud place in local sporting history. Formed in 1970 under challenging circumstances, the club faced early struggles just getting a team on the field. With determination and a strong community spirit, it grew into a formidable side.
The founding of the club was driven by the vision of John Hilliard, who enlisted local supermarket manager George Scrase as president and well-respected councillor and grazier Gerry Allingham as patron, while John himself took on the role of secretary-treasurer. Those first seasons delivered only a handful of wins, but thanks to a few key southern recruits and growing local support, Wallaman soon built a reputation as a side to watch.
Much of the club’s strength came from its supporters and volunteers. Stalwarts such as Joe and Mus, Eddie Joyce, Vic Liborio, Eddie and Colleen Danieli, Frank and Donna Morris, and Lloyd and Rhonda Greentree, alongside backing from local publicans, were instrumental in keeping the club afloat.
The reunion kicked off on Friday night with a lively meet-and-greet at the Station Hotel, setting the tone for a weekend filled with nostalgia and reconnection. On Saturday night, attendees gathered at the Ingham RSL, where MC Jim Busuttin shared club history and acknowledged the presence of two daughters of founding president George Scrase, as well as three original members of the first Wallaman team.
One of the evening’s highlights was the auctioning of a signed and framed 2006 Brisbane Broncos jersey, generously donated by Bill Micola. The winning bid came from Brian Winkle, with all proceeds going towards the RSL’s upcoming fundraiser for the National Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The event was a celebration not only of the club’s history, but of the community that supported it. A fitting tribute to a team that brought so many together.
Many thanks to Kathy & Peter Burdell for organising the event, taking photos and contributing to this article. See the full photo gallery online.

The Ingham Bowls Club played host to its milestone 25th Annual Invitation Fours Carnival over the weekend of 27–28 July, welcoming teams from across North Queensland. Rain threatened to delay proceedings on Saturday morning, but with a later start time, the skies eventually cleared, the green dried out, and play got underway as planned. From that point on, it was smooth sailing across two days of high-quality, spirited competition on the green.
Teams travelled from far and wide, including Cairns, Innisfail, Tully, Townsville, Hughenden, Proserpine and Ingham. Congratulations to the winning team from Jubilee, who took out top honours after a consistent and strategic showing across the weekend.
The club extended its sincere thanks to all participating teams for their support, and to the many hardworking volunteers who made the event possible, from prepping the greens to keeping the refreshments flowing. Special thanks also go to the generous sponsors who contributed to the weekend's success. The Ingham Bowls Club looks forward to seeing everyone back in 2026 for another fantastic weekend of bowls.

Four of Ingham’s promising junior tennis players recently travelled to Townsville to compete in the latest round of the Junior Development Series (JDS), a popular tournament format that matches players by skill level rather than age.
Scott, Macie, Miles and Riley represented Ingham Tennis in the day-long event, enjoying the chance to test their abilities against players from across the region. With matches determined by ability, not age, the competition often sees younger players facing off against much older opponents, making for exciting and unpredictable matchups.
While our juniors didn’t place this time, they gained valuable experience and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The tournament also offered plenty of opportunities for socialising with players from other towns, and the perfect weather made it an even more enjoyable outing.
The focus now shifts to Ingham, which will host its own JDS tournament towards the end of the month. Local juniors are encouraged to sign up and experience the fun, friendly and competitive environment the JDS series is known for.

In a powerful act of community support, the Ingham Lions Club Executive recently presented a cheque to the organisers of the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride (TCBR), helping drive momentum towards their $400,000 fundraising goal for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA). Their donation contributes to the impressive $360,079 already raised, each dollar going toward lifesaving research and care for children fighting cancer.
Sixty years ago, childhood cancer was nearly always fatal. Today, thanks to medical research and community-driven fundraising, over 80% of children survive. But there’s still work to do—more than 1,000 young Australians are diagnosed with cancer each year, and tragically, three children die from the disease every week.
Childhood cancer isn’t caused by lifestyle or preventable choices. It strikes without warning, demanding care, compassion and critical funding. By supporting the TCBR and the CCIA, the Ingham Lions Club is helping to give every child the best chance at life and the care they need and deserve.

In a proud moment for the Forrest Beach Surf Life Saving Club, members recently welcomed Surf Life Saving Queensland President Gerard O’Brien and Surf Life Saving Australia President John Baker AM ESM for a heartfelt visit. The Presidents travelled to Forrest Beach to personally thank the club for its extraordinary efforts during February’s devastating floods. Local member for Hinchinbrook, Nick Dametto, was also there to show his recognition alongside the Presidents in a powerful reminder of the club’s vital role not only in coastal safety, but also in times of community crisis.
The visit came not long after Forrest Beach SLSC were named Club of the Year at the 2024–25 North Barrier Branch Awards for the second year in a row. Also receiving the Innovation Award for its flood response, alongside individual accolades that reflect the strength and dedication of its membership. Honourees included Lenny Chiesa (Clive Hammond Medal), Pam Chiesa (Team Manager of the Year), Therese Reid (Volunteer of the Year), Jett Reid (Junior Lifesaver of the Year), Evandah Bann (Athlete of the Year), and the U19 Relay Team (Team of the Year).
Despite wild weather, the strong turnout of enthusiastic nippers was a clear sign that the spirit of Forrest Beach SLSC is as strong as ever. A successful season launch and sign-on day, these young surf lifesavers represent the future of the club, and their commitment, even in less-than-perfect conditions, speaks volumes. It was a proud reminder that the values of teamwork, courage and service continue to thrive in the next generation.

Lucinda Coast Guard volunteers were contacted on July 19th's wet and windy morning, and were tasked with launching their large rescue vessel "Snow Stafford", and to proceed to Zoe Bay on Hinchinbrook Island.
A couple with two small children had been camping over there for several days, but awoke that morning to discover that the weather had severely deteriorated, and the seas were too big and dangerous for them to attempt the return trip to Dungeness. An anchored yacht was luckily able to contact the Coast Guard for them, in a place where phone and radio reception is usually very poor.
The Coast Guard crew arrived after a very rough trip and managed to transfer the wife and children into the rescue vessel, while the husband steered the tinnie while under tow. It was then a very slow and rough trip back, with very sea-sick passengers, but all were landed safely at Dungeness after a delay due to the low tide.
People who go camping on our wonderful islands should be aware of the weather conditions for several days beyond their planned return date, to ensure that they can cover the distance back safely.
Plan well, and stay safe on the water.

Despite the rain in Ingham, the Parkrunners were out this weekend enjoying a morning of exercise. Palm Creek saw visitors from all over; Cairns, Rockhampton, Brisbane, Adelaide, and even the Red Earth Running squad came down from Cardwell to give Palm Creek a go. Two of them achieved PBs along with three others and a new runner took out the top spot this week.
Luckily for Cardwell, the rain stayed away. They had a turnout of 6 parkrunners, and one achieved a PB. It was only regulars this week but that made for a very cosy running experience as they all finished the course quite close together in time.
Remember, you can grab a coffee or post-parkrun brekkie with friends afterwards. Dry out at a local cafe and warm those hands around a steaming cup of hot chocolate with the kids.

What began as a planned gathering for 80 quickly grew to a sold-out event, welcoming 120 guests who filled the Noorla Bowls Club in Ingham to capacity. Our usual Coffee Club of around 40 members more than tripled in size for this special day, with the added delight of 21 visitors from Rollingstone Neighbourhood Centre and groups from Lifelong Supports and Blue Care.
These valuable partnerships and events help create meaningful social connections and reduce isolation among our seniors, something our Centre is deeply committed to. Adding an informative touch, we were joined by two wonderful representatives from ADA Australia, who gave an insightful presentation about their fully funded advocacy services for older persons, highlighting vital support available within our community.
It was a feast to remember as guests were treated to a traditional Christmas meal, lovingly prepared by the talented team at Oasis Café. The generous spread featured baked ham, roasted pork, lamb, and vegetables, pasta and salad, and a crowd-favourite lasagne made by our very own HCSC Men’s Group facilitator, Angelo — a true kitchen whiz! To finish, a classic trifle provided a sweet end to a hearty meal.
The holiday spirit was alive and well, with many attendees arriving dressed in their best Christmas-themed outfits. Best Dressed prizes went to Veronica as The Grinch, Jimmy as Woody, Carol as Mrs Claus, Gordon as Christmas Bob Marley, and young Tara, whose festive energy lit up the room. The celebration continued with lively Bingo games and a spirited round of Trivia that had everyone scratching their heads and laughing in equal measure.
A special thank you goes to Rachele from the Lions Club, who not only brought along the iconic Lions Christmas Cakes, one of which was kindly donated as a raffle prize, but also generously lent a hand serving meals and ensuring everyone was well looked after. Events like these are only possible through the dedication of our wonderful volunteers and the unwavering support of the HCSC Staff. Your time, energy, and community spirit are the beating heart of these special gatherings.
To everyone who joined us for our Christmas in July, thank you for bringing warmth, laughter, and festive joy to our seniors. Here’s to many more moments of connection and celebration within our Hinchinbrook community.
